ARBOR BECOMES MARKET SHARE LEADER IN METROPOLITAN DETROIT

TROY, Mich., April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Arbor Drugs, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: ARBR) has attained the No. 1 position in the drugstore segment of the seven-county metropolitan Detroit trading area, according to a study conducted by Boston-based Metro Market Studies. The Detroit market, which ranks fifth in total drugstore sales nationally, is comprised of: Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, St. Clair, Monroe, Lapeer and Livingston counties.
Arbor has shown consistent and meaningful growth in metropolitan Detroit, its primary trading area. From a level of 13.5 percent in 1986 to 27.6 percent in 1993, the company has more than doubled its market share over the last seven years. Metro Market's independent research was tabulated for the 12-month period ended Oct. 31, 1992.
Commenting on the results, Arbor Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Eugene Applebaum said, "This is indeed a very proud moment for all of us at Arbor. Our company has the momentum in place to continue to increase our market share position, just as we have done every year in which Metro Market Studies has conducted this sales audit. These annual increases in market share reflect the outstanding contributions of our entire organization. Our growth strategy remains on schedule with the planned addition of 15-20 new stores during fiscal 1993."
Arbor Drugs, founded in 1963 by Applebaum in Dearborn, Mich., is the nation's 21st-largest drugstore chain. Presently, the company operates 133 full-service stores, all in Michigan, and has more than 4,000 employees.
