ARAMCO SERVICES SELECTS STONE AND WEBSTER ENGINEERING TO PROVIDE DESIGN

HOUSTON, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Aramco Services Company has selected Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation to provide a conceptual engineering design package for the protection of one of the major seawater intakes in Saudi Arabia from oil spills.
The intake provides seawater that is used in process cooling, desalination and power generation.
The intake is an open structure that consists of two jetties running perpendicular to the shoreline. Pumps deliver seawater from an open channel to an elevated concrete canal from which it is again pumped for distribution.
The protection program will require lining the channel walls to prevent seepage of hydrocarbons. The improvements also will include the addition of barriers equipped with collection equipment and facilities to treat the water to be used in power plant boilers. New instrumentation will monitor hydrocarbons in the seawater and control the collection equipment.
In a recent study for Saudi Aramco, Stone & Webster investigated measures to protect 55 separate intakes and related structures in Saudi Arabia from oil spills.
This assignment is an outgrowth of that investigation. It will be conducted by engineering and environmental personnel from Stone & Webster's Houston, Boston and Fort Lauderdale offices. Field activities will be coordinated by the company's Al-Khobar office, which serves clients throughout the Middle East.
Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation is an international, multidisciplinary engineering and construction organization specializing in technologically advanced projects in such area as environmental restoration, power generation, and refining and petrochemical work. The company also undertakes transportation, pulp and paper, and other industrial projects. Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation is a subsidiary of Stone & Webster, Incorporated of New York City.
