Dundee United are set to make former Motherwell and Falkirk stopper Brian McLean their next summer signing.

The 6ft 3in defender is in the throes of finalising a severance package with Preston after being transfer listed as part of a massive 21-man cull.

United expect to have a deal tied up early this week should the results of scans on injuries McLean suffered early in his career come back all clear.

Arabs boss Peter Houston believes the 27-year-old would make an ideal replacement for departing Garry Kenneth.

And having already snapped up Michael Gardyne and Mark Millar from Ross County and Falkirk respectively, Houston is keen to strengthen in time for the Europa League.
