ARAB-US RELATIONS - Jan. 23 - Yemeni Plane Hijacked.

The Yemenia Boeing 727 carrying the US Ambassador in Sana'a Barbara Bodine and three other US officials is hijacked and diverted to Djibouti by a Yemeni national Mohammed Yehia Ali Sattar. The hijacker intended to fly from Djibouti to Baghdad with Bodine as the only passenger. But upon landing in Djibouti the crew overpowered the hijacker allowing all passengers, including Bodine, to disembark safely. The hijacker was hospitalised due to injuries inflicted by his own gun. (Because of the hijacking, Bodine missed an appointment with Yemeni Pres. Ali Abdullah Saleh at which the terrorist attack on the destroyer Cole on Oct. 12, 2000 and increased security co-operation were to be discussed).
