ARAB-US RELATIONS - Feb. 12 - 12% Of US Reserves Active In War On Terror.

Defence Department spokesman Lt. Col. Dan Stoneking reports a huge increase in the call-up of National Guard and reserve troops in the past week. Now the number of reservists serving in the war on terrorism increased to more than 12% of the total force. Some 38,600 were activated during the week, nearly double the previous largest weekly jump since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Some will deploy to the Middle East, and others will serve in the US. Under an order signed by Pres. Bush three days after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, up to one million guard and reserve troops can be called to serve for up to two years. Officials say it is unlikely that number will be needed. The total now serving under that order is more than 150,000, Stoneking said.
