ARA SERVICES IS LEADING CORPORATION IN GLOBAL SERVICE MANAGEMENT MARKETPLACE

PHILADELPHIA, July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- While the world's customs and cultures may vary, U.S.-based ARA Services, Inc. has developed a universal business strategy that has driven the company to the top of the global service management market.
A careful balance of acquisitions and joint ventures coupled with aggressive internal growth has fueled ARA's continuing success abroad. With the company's recent purchase of a controlling interest in the contract food service portion of Spain's HUSA Group, ARA's 1993 international sales will reach approximately $1.1 billion. In the field of contract food service, one of the company's primary lines of business, ARA's sales outside its home base lead the industry.
ARA's First Wave of Global Expansion
ARA launched its international expansion in 1967 with the purchase of a majority interest in the Canadian company Versa Services, Ltd. Today, Versa is Canada's largest food service provider in the business, healthcare, education and leisure markets.
During the early 70s, ARA turned its sights to Europe, where through the acquisition of a vending company, it began to establish a foundation in the United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium. Since then, ARA's wholly owned subsidiaries have grown steadily to rank among the top food service companies in all three countries.
ARA's U.K. operations focus on food and coffee service for the business and industry market. In addition, ARA provides a full line of food service to crews stationed on oil rigs in the North Sea. The acquisition of Stuart Cabeldu Catering, Ltd. in early 1993 helped to strengthen ARA's position in the greater London area.
In Germany, where ARA is the second largest contract food service company, the bulk of its accounts are in the business and industry market. For ARA-Belgium, business and healthcare operations comprise the majority of its food service and coffee vending business.
Extending its international service management network still farther, ARA revolutionized the provision of hospital food service in Japan when it established a joint-venture company (AIM Services, Ltd.) with Mitsui, Ltd. in 1976. Prior to ARA's arrival, the family members of hospital patients brought food to them from home. Since its inception, AIM has experienced steady growth and diversification by entering the business and education food service markets.
ARA Capitalizes on Emerging International Business Opportunities
ARA is utilizing its international foothold to capitalize on the rapidly increasing interest in and acceptance of outsourcing. Dramatic social, political and business changes spreading throughout eastern Europe, the Pacific rim and Latin America are opening the doors to new opportunities for ARA as well.
When the Berlin Wall fell, ARA was the first U.S. firm to open an office in what had been East Germany. To date, ARA has sold 30 major food service accounts there. ARA also was the first U.S. company to set up operations in Hungary and Czechoslovakia.
Earlier this year, ARA posted yet another first when it established Korea's first major contract food service company through the formation of a joint venture with an affiliate of the Daewoo Corporation, one of the country's major trading companies. And, moving to the opposite side of the globe, ARA recently launched operations in Mexico, where it is providing food service for several industrial accounts and a major hospital in Mexico City.
Along with extending the geographic boundaries of its service management network, ARA is poised to take advantage of new opportunities in those locations where it already has a strong presence. In the United Kingdom, for example, ARA has pinpointed the education market as a source of potential new business. ARA Germany, on the other hand, is gearing up to enter the healthcare food service field.
ARA's International Success Hinges On Local Management
ARA's continuing success in the global arena can be traced to its strong emphasis on having local nationals manage its various international businesses. Additionally, ARA has developed a knack for translating its proven service management systems and expertise to meet the varied needs of clients and customers around the world.
To help facilitate this exchange of expertise, ARA's U.S. operations regularly host managers from abroad to give them a first hand look at how the company puts its many sales, marketing and quality control programs into action. Further support is provided by ARA's own team of international consultants who visit the company's foreign operations to provide guidance and direction on how to utilize ARA's programs.
ARA Offers More Than Just Food Service to International Clients
Following ARA's lead in the United States, several of the company's international operations have successfully diversified into other areas of service management. In Canada, ARA's affiliate Versa Services provides janitorial services for commercial and educational facilities. Likewise, similar services are provided by ARA in the United Kingdom.
ARA also has successfully exported its U.S.-based wealth of expertise in the uniform rental business to Japan. As it did when it entered Japan's hospital food service market, ARA is pioneering the concept of uniform rental through a joint venture with its long-time partner Mitsui.
ARA's U.S.-Based Operations Are Industry Leaders
In all of its U.S. businesses, ARA is either the leader or No. 2 company in the industry. Headquartered in Philadelphia, ARA provides fully integrated services in the food/leisure, textile rental/ maintenance, health/education, and magazine and book distribution fields. ARA is an employee-owned company with more than 124,000 employees worldwide and 1992 sales of $5 billion.
