ARA BRINGS OLYMPIC TASTE TO PORTLAND
PORTLAND, Ore., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Most of the area's

businesspeople and administrators probably won't find time to compete in the Olympic Summer Games in Barcelona, Spain -- no matter what kind of shape they're in.
But if they're clients of ARA Services, they will get a chance to sample the Olympic experience this Sunday, June 7, at 10:30 a.m. on the 41st floor of the U.S. Bancorp Tower, 11 S.W. Fifth Ave., Portland.
ARA is the official food service manager of the Barcelona Games. It will present a preview of the international cuisine, that will be served to the world's finest athletes this summer, at a special Sunday brunch for clients.
ARA's Nancy Oberschmidt, host for the day, said the brunch for clients and guests will feature a sampling of the training foods to be served to the 15,000 athletes, coaches and staff members from 165 nations participating in the Summer Games.
According to Oberschmidt, the typical Olympic Games meal will include seven hot entrees, two soups, grilled items, a salad bar, and an abundance of vegetables and starches, as well as a wide selection of breads, fruits and, yes, desserts. ARA will play an integral part in the food service operations, which include serving more than 2.4 million meals during the Summer Games.
A typical Olympic athlete consumes an average of 5,000 calories a day, Oberschmidt said, although some weightlifters may consume up to 8,000 calories a day.
Serving the athletes in Barcelona won't be a new job for the company. ARA provided the food service at the 1968 Olympic Summer Games in Mexico City, the 1976 Olympic Summer Games in Montreal, the 1984 Olympic Winter and Summer Games, and the 1988 Olympic Summer Games in Seoul, South Korea.
Oberschmidt said ARA's grocery list for the Barcelona Games is a mammoth one, including 500,000 pounds of meat and poultry, 550,000 pounds of fruit, 50,000 gallons of milk, and 110,000 loaves of bread.
ARA, headquartered in Philadelphia, provides a variety of services in addition to food service, including health care, child care, uniform rental, building maintenance and periodical distribution.
