AQUATRED TIRE BY GOODYEAR WINS MAJOR AWARD
AKRON, Ohio, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Industrial Designers

Society of America (IDSA) has recognized the Goodyear (NYSE: GT) Aquatred radial tire as one of the top 25 new-product designs for 1992.
IDSA officials said it was the first tire to win a Gold Industrial Design Excellence Award in the 12-year program. The awards, sponsored by Business Week magazine, will be presented Aug. 19 in San Francisco.
The Goodyear tire and 24 other Gold award winners were picked from 753 entries. The Aquatred tire is featured in the June 8 issue of Business Week magazine.
The award for Aquatred is the third major design and engineering prize for the tire since its introduction last fall. Popular Science and Popular Mechanics magazines both singled out the tire for awards.
"Here is an innovative solution to conflicting objectives: increased tread wear and improved traction in wet conditions. It's a strikingly different look that visually communicates its functional attributes," said Fritz Mayhew, chief design executive for Ford and IDSA judge.
The Aquatred, which looks like two motorcycle tires combined into one passenger tire, has a deep grove -- called an aquachannel -- running around the middle of the tire. The aquachannel expels water from beneath the tire and improves traction and stopping ability in the rain.
The world's first family car tire with an aquachannel also carries a 60,000-mile treadlife warranty.
"Like no other tire design from the past, the Aquatred's radically different appearance says wet traction," said Fred Kovac, vice president of worldwide tire technology for Goodyear. "From the deep center channel, the sweeping lateral grooves, the serrated sidewall design to its very name, the Aquatred 'tells' consumers of its improved traction on rain-slick roads."
Thanks to its design, Aquatred increases wet traction up to 25 percent with more contact area on the road than other tires, Kovac said.
IDSA judged entries on innovation, benefits to the consumer, appropriate use of materials, appearance appeal and positive social impact.
"The importance of advanced tire design in this tire's development is evident in the marketplace," said Kovac. "Armed with market research -- or what we know as the voice of the customer -- our designers struck a responsive chord among consumers with Aquatred's design. Namely, we found motorists are willing to buy added value.
"In the evolution of safer automobiles, our engineers, with Aquatred, join the ranks of other automotive designers, who developed air bags, anti-lock braking systems, passive restraints, safety cages and energy-absorbing steering columns," Kovac said.
