APRIL SALES INCREASE 11.2 PERCENT FOR THE MAY DEPARTMENT STORES COMPANY
 ST. LOUIS, May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company (NYSE: MA) today reported preliminary sales of $815.7 million for the four-week period ended May 2, an increase of 11.2 percent from sales of $733.3 million during the similar four-week period last year. The April reporting period included pre-Easter sales this year which were in March last year.
 For the first quarter of fiscal 1992, sales were $2.30 billion, up 5.9 percent from sales of $2.17 billion during the same period a year ago.
 April sales for the department store segment were $649.6 million, an increase of 8.3 percent or $49.8 million from last year. Sales for Payless ShoeSource totaled $166.1 million, up 24.4 percent or $32.6 million from last year's similar four-week period.

 (a) -- Store-for-store sales represent sales of those stores open during both years.
 Sales have been restated to exclude the sales of stores which have been closed and not replaced. Year-to-date revenues, including sales of nonreplaced closed stores and finance charge revenue, were $2.39 billion in 1992 and $2.31 billion in 1991.
 The May Department Stores Company is the largest department store retailer in the United States, operating 319 department stores and 3,304 Payless ShoeSource stores.
