APRIL MUTUAL FUND SALES TOTAL $40.9 BILLION

 WASHINGTON, May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Sales of stock and bond and income mutual funds totaled $40.9 billion in April, according to the Investment Company Institute, the national association of the mutual fund industry. This compares with total sales of $42.2 billion in March and $29.8 billion in April 1992.
 Sales of stock mutual funds totaled $18.2 billion in both April and March, compared to $13.0 billion in April 1992. Growth and income funds, with sales of $6.1 billion, led all fund categories.
 April sales of bond and income mutual funds totaled $22.7 billion, compared with $24.0 billion in March and $16.8 billion in April 1992. Government bond funds led bond and income fund categories, with sales of $3.7 billion.
 Total sales represent the total value of purchases of new shares, including reinvested dividends. The total sales number does not include exchanges from one fund to another in the same fund group, nor does it account for redemptions of shares.
 NEW SALES
 New sales (which exclude reinvested dividends) totaled $38.9 billion in April, compared with $39.2 billion in March and $27.9 billion April 1992.
 New sales of stock funds were $18.0 billion, compared with $17.3 billion in March and $12.6 billion in April 1992. New sales of bond and income funds reached $20.9 billion, compared with $21.9 billion in March and $15.2 billion in April 1992.
 REDEMPTIONS
 Total redemptions (liquidation of shares by fund shareholders) were $17.7 billion in April, compared with $19.4 billion in March and $13.4 billion in April 1992. Stock fund redemptions were $6.7 billion in April, compared with $7.3 billion in March and $5.5 billion in April 1992. Bond and income fund redemptions were $10.9 billion in April, compared with $12.1 billion in March and $8.0 billion in April 1992.
 NET SALES
 Total net sales (sales including reinvested dividends less redemptions) of long-term funds, including stock and bond and income categories, were $23.3 billion in April, compared with $22.8 billion in March and $16.4 billion in April 1992. Net sales of stock funds were $11.5 billion in April, compared with $10.9 billion in March and $7.6 billion in April 1992. Net sales of bond and income funds were $11.8 billion in April compared with $11.9 billion in March and $8.8 billion in April 1992.
 NET NEW SALES
 Net new sales (sales excluding reinvested dividends less redemptions) were $21.2 billion in April, compared with $19.8 billion in March and $14.5 billion in April 1992. Net new sales of stock funds in April were $11.3 billion, compared with $10.0 billion in March and $7.2 billion in April 1992. April net new sales of bond and income funds were $10.0 billion, compared with $9.8 billion in March and $7.3 billion April 1992.
 NET EXCHANGES
 Net exchanges of stock funds totaled $322.6 million, compared with $1.3 billion in March and $246.5 million in April 1992. Bond fund net exchanges were $29.8 million, compared with -$1.3 billion in March and $143.8 million in April 1992. Exchanges are investments redeemed from one fund and moved to another fund in the same fund group or complex.
 NET CASH FLOW
 Net cash flow (net sales combined with net exchanges) into long-term funds was $23.6 billion in April, compared with $22.8 billion in March and $16.8 billion in April 1992. Net cash flow into stock funds was $11.8 billion in April, compared with $12.2 billion in March and $7.8 billion in April 1992. Net cash flow into bond and income funds was $11.8 billion in April, compared with $10.6 billion in March and $9.0 billion in April 1992.
 NET NEW CASH FLOW
 Net new cash flow (net new sales combined with net exchanges) into long-term funds was $21.6 billion, compared with $19.8 billion in March and $14.8 billion in April 1992. Net new cash flow into stock funds was $11.6 billion in April, compared with $11.3 billion in March and $7.4 billion in April 1992. Net new cash flow into bond and income funds was $10.0 billion, compared with $8.5 billion in March and $7.4 billion in 1992.
 ASSETS
 Assets of all mutual funds totaled $1.746 trillion ($1,746.0 billion) at the end of April, compared with $1.711 trillion ($1,711.0 billion) at the end of March. Total assets at the end of April 1992 were $1.445 trillion ($1,445.4 billion). Total assets of long-term funds for April reached $1.179 trillion ($1,179.0 billion), compared with $1.154 trillion ($1,154.4 billion) in March and $871.2 billion for April 1992.
 Assets of short-term funds (money market funds, including both taxable and tax-exempt) rose to $567.3 billion at the end of April, from $556.6 billion at the end of March. Assets of these short-term funds were $574.1 billion at the end of April 1992.
