 APPLEBEE'S BOARD ELECTS GUSTIN CHAIRMAN;
 ACCEPTS RESIGNATION OF CHAIRMAN EMERITUS HAMRA
 KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Applebee's International, Inc., (NASDAQ: APPB) announced today that its board of directors has elected Abe J. Gustin Jr. as chairman of the board and has accepted the resignation of John Hamra, both as chairman emeritus and as a board member. Hamra had been chairman emeritus since stepping down as chairman in January 1991.
 Gustin, 57, will continue to serve as president and chief executive officer. He was one of the co-founders, with Hamra, of Applebee's International, Inc., which opened its first restaurant in 1986 as a franchisee of the Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar division of W.R. Grace & Co. Gustin and Hamra, in their roles as senior managers of the company, subsequently acquired the Applebee's division from W.R. Grace in 1988 and took the company public in 1989.
 Gustin, chairman and CEO said, "John Hamra and I had a dream five years ago of building a national system of casual dining restaurants based on the idea of offering exceptional food values in a neighborhood atmosphere. That dream is a reality today, with 226 restaurants open in 31 states. We also have 20 new restaurants under construction and 51 additional sites approved.
 "John has been a great business associate and a valued asset to the company, and we will miss him on the board. We have, however, built an outstanding management team that can work with our franchisees to take the Applebee's concept to its full national potential over the next several years. Both personally and for the board of directors, I wish John Hamra all the best."
 Gustin also indicated that the board is currently considering candidates to fill Hamra's seat on the board.
 Applebee's International, Inc., headquartered in Kansas City, develops, franchises and operates a rapidly expanding national chain of restaurants under the trademark Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar.
