APPLEBEE'S ANNOUNCES FOURTH QUARTER AND ANNUAL SYSTEM SALES

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Applebee's International, Inc., (NASDAQ: APPB) announced today that total sales for the Applebee's system increased 48 percent during the fourth quarter ended Dec. 27, 1992, compared with the fourth quarter of 1991. Total system sales were $113.2 million during the fourth quarter of 1992, up from $76.4 million during the fourth quarter of 1991.
System-wide comparable restaurant sales increased 12.5 percent during the fourth quarter of 1992, compared with the fourth quarter of 1991. Comparable sales of company-owned and operated restaurants increased 14.5 percent and comparable franchisee sales were up 12.2 percent during the fourth quarter.
The company said that 1992 fourth quarter earnings may not correlate directly with system sales growth. Fourth quarter company restaurant operating margins may be negatively affected because operating expenses for the period, as a percent of sales, are expected to be higher than historical levels. The company expects to release its financial results for the fiscal year ended Dec. 27, 1992, in late February 1993.
Total system sales for the fiscal year ended Dec. 27, 1992, were $404.2 million, an increase of 40 percent over total system sales of $289.6 million for fiscal year 1991.
For fiscal year 1992, system-wide comparable restaurant sales increased 10.9 percent, compared with fiscal 1991. Comparable sales of company-owned and operated restaurants increased 11.6 percent and comparable franchisee sales were up 10.7 percent for the year.
System sales include franchisee sales as reported to Applebee's International, as well as sales of company-owned or operated restaurants.
Applebee's International, Inc., headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., develops, franchises and operates a rapidly expanding national chain of restaurants under the trademark Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar. As of the date of this release, there are 255 Applebee's restaurants operating in 34 states, with an additional 18 restaurants under construction.
