APPLE USA RECRUITS UNIX VARs WITH AGGRESSIVE LOAN-TO-OWN PROGRAM

CAMPBELL, Calif., June 14 -- Apple USA, a division of Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL), today announced an aggressive promotional campaign designed to recruit UNIX value added resellers (VARs). The campaign provides an attractive "loan-to-own" offer that lets U.S. VARs earn an Apple Macintosh Quadra 800 A/UX compatible system when they sell three Apple Workgroup Servers. A/UX is Apple's implementation of the UNIX operating system.
Under the terms of the offer(A), Apple Authorized A/UX VARs receive free use of a Macintosh Quadra 800 with A/UX 3.0.1, an external CD, 14-inch monitor and keyboard for four months beginning anytime prior to Sept. 1, 1993. VARs can use this system to port, demonstrate and promote their vertical solutions. If VARs sell any combination of three eligible Apple Workgroup Servers during the loan period, they may keep the Macintosh Quadra 800 system free of charge. The eligible servers include the Apple Workgroup Server 95, the Macintosh Quadra 800 with A/UX 3.0.1 license and the Macintosh Quadra 950 with A/UX 3.0.1 license. The systems must be purchased from one of Apple's three U.S. national distributors: Ingram Micro, Merisel or Tech Data.
"The program is a way of encouraging existing UNIX VARs to port their vertical, character-based applications to A/UX," said Greg Rhine, national sales manager for the distributor VAR program at Apple USA. "Porting to A/UX opens a whole new market and provides significant differentiation for VARs without rewriting their current applications."
 (A) See below for complete terms and conditions.
The UNIX VAR promotional campaign complements a related Apple program designed to extend the momentum for A/UX and the Apple Workgroup Server 95 to the end-user channel. Apple's Enterprise Systems Division (ESD) announced today an incentive program for customers upgrading to an Apple Workgroup Server 95 and AppleShare Pro (See related press release "Apple Announces Incentive Program for AppleShare Pro and Apple Workgroup Server 95 Upgrades"). Both of these programs are designed to accelerate the sales momentum created by the recent shipping of Apple's flagship A/UX-based server -- the Apple Workgroup Server 95.
An Apple Workgroup Server running A/UX integrates seamlessly with Macintosh desktops, combining powerful multi-user character-based applications with a whole suite of easy-to-use Macintosh productivity applications. In most cases, simple recompilation of an existing application under A/UX significantly increases the VAR's value with current customers while opening new sales opportunities within the established Apple installed base.
"We're committed to growing this segment of the market," added Rhine. "Apple, along with the support of Ingram Micro, Merisel and Tech Data, is supporting this recruitment effort with extensive direct mail and an aggressive national advertising campaign."
In February 1992, Ingram Micro, Merisel and Tech Data were selected to recruit and pre-qualify small to medium enterprise VARs. The three were selected due to their ability to provide efficient purchasing and delivery, technical support, training, financing programs and communications. In addition, these distributors each possess a strong VAR following with a differentiated vertical focus.
To become an authorized A/UX VAR in the United States, VARs must call one of Apple's national distributors and request an Apple distributor VAR application form. The VAR must complete and return the application form to the distributor. The distributor then submits the application to Apple for approval. Currently, the program is only available in the United States. For more information, VARs can call 800-782-0808, extension 150.
 Specific Terms and Conditions
Under the terms of the offer, an Apple Authorized A/UX VAR will enter into an approved lease for a Macintosh Quadra 800 with A/UX 3.0.1, an external CD, 14-inch monitor and keyboard. Apple will make the lease payments for the first four months. At the end of four months, the lease can be terminated or continued at the VAR's expense. If during the four-month lease period the VAR sells three development systems, the leased system will be given to the VAR at no cost. VARs must enter into the lease prior to Sept. 1, 1993.
