APPLE UNVEILS NEW IDENTITY FOR THE MACINTOSH OPERATING SYSTEM; MAC OS GOES HEAD-TO-HEAD AGAINST WINDOWS

CUPERTINO, Calif., Sept. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Apple Computer, Inc. (Nasdaq-NNM: AAPL) today revealed that a new face will begin to appear on millions of Apple Macintosh computers around the world. As part of its strategy to increase worldwide market share for the Macintosh computing platform, Apple is rolling out a new visual identity for the Macintosh operating system -- now called the Mac OS. The new Mac OS logo adds the profile of a new face to the well known "Happy Mac" icon -- signifying Apple's more open approach to attracting new users to the platform, and underscoring the company's long-standing focus on friendly interaction between people and computers.
The unveiling of the Mac OS logo is one element of increased marketing activities for the Macintosh operating system. "Creating a separate identity for the Macintosh operating system is a shot across the Windows' bow," said Guerrino De Luca, vice president of marketing for the company's AppleSoft division. "We plan to compete aggressively in the marketplace, and we will use this new logo to raise the visibility for the Mac OS."
The Mac OS logo will appear on the screen when a computer running the Mac OS is started up. It also can be displayed on products, product packaging and product literature from Apple and other companies to provide an easy indication to customers that the products are compatible with the Mac OS. Products may include computers marketed by hardware manufacturers who license the Mac OS, software packages, books, and hardware "peripherals" such as printers and disk drives. A simple, no-fee license agreement allows these vendors to use the new logo, providing that the products work with the latest version of the Macintosh operating system. Developers began receiving information about licensing the logo this week. Apple expects the logo to begin appearing on products this year.
"We designed the new Mac OS logo to appeal to a diverse audience," said Gaynelle Grover, creative director for Apple's corporate identity group. "Our customers range from young children in school to high-powered MIS directors in large corporations. So we needed a symbol that was equally relevant to all -- conveying the inherent friendliness and innovation of the Mac OS as well as the performance and compatibility for which it is now becoming known."
Parties interested in licensing the Mac OS logo should contact Apple Software Licensing at 512-919-2645.
