APPLE SHIPS NEW RELEASE OF MACX
APPLE SHIPS NEW RELEASE OF MACX CUPERTINO, Calif., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Apple Computer Inc.
(NASDAQ: AAPL) today announced availability of MacX 1.2, a new version of Apple's X Window System display server that offers support for Apple Macintosh computers running System 7.1 system software and adds the Backing Store and Save Under capabilities of the X Window System. System 7.1 is Apple's latest version of its operating system software, available with all Apple computers.
MacX enables MIS managers to integrate Macintosh computers into organizations that use equipment from multiple vendors in a standards-based environment. MacX 1.2 runs on any Macintosh computer using A/UX, Apple's industry-standard UNIX for the Macintosh, or Macintosh Operating System 6.0.5 or later. The MacX software provides X Window System access and functionality for customers using Macintosh computers, giving them simultaneous access to both X Window System and other Macintosh applications. As part of its integrated computing environment, MacX provides such ease-of-use features as Macintosh pull-down windows, X Window System application support within Macintosh windows and the ability to cut and paste text and color graphics between Macintosh and X Window System applications. In addition to supporting System 7.1, MacX 1.2 adds a key X Window System functionality. The new software provides industry-standard Backing Store and Save Under capability, allowing users to regulate the frequency of screen updates. This improves both the accuracy and performance of client window displays. Several default settings have been changed with version 1.2 to improve application compatibility and user convenience. MacX 1.2, like its predecessor, implements the X Window System Version 11, Release 4 standard, ICCCM window management and XLFD font control. It also offers open system networking, supporting all major networking protocols for the Macintosh, including AppleTalk, TCP/IP and DECnet. MacX requires a minimum of 2 megabytes of RAM, although Apple recommends 5 megabytes. A/UX 3.0 customers who are already using MacX 1.1.7 can choose to upgrade to MacX 1.2 by purchasing the MacX Update Product. The next version of A/UX will incorporate MacX 1.2. (MacX has been included in A/UX since March 1991.) MacX 1.2 is available in the United States for $239 (U.S.). Customers who have any version of MacX prior to release 1.2 can purchase the MacX 1.2 Update Product for $49 (U.S.). Existing customers can also purchase MacX Right-To-Copy Licenses for $215 (U.S.) per additional new system and the MacX Right-to-Copy Update License for $31 (U.S.) per additional update system. All pricing represents the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MRSP). MacX products are available in the United States through Apple authorized resellers and through Apple Direct at 800-795-1000.
