APPLE PROMOTES DIERY TO HEAD WORLDWIDE SALES AND MARKETING
CUPERTINO, Calif., July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) today announced the appointment of Ian Diery, 42, to the newly created position of executive vice president for worldwide sales and marketing. Diery, who had served as president of Apple's Pacific division, will assume his new duties immediately.
"Ian's record of achievement is well known throughout Apple and the industry," said Michael Spindler, Apple's chief operating officer. "In the nearly three years he's headed Apple Pacific, we've seen a 70 percent growth in revenue from that region. During his tenure, Apple nearly tripled its business in Japan, grew market share in a troubled Canadian economy, added a subsidiary in Taiwan and grew Apple's first place brand leadership in Australia. Ian is an outstanding executive known for his keen understanding of customer needs, practical business strategy and fiscal management.
"I've asked Ian to take on this new role at this time as a reflection of the progress we continue to make in our strategy to be a much bigger player in the computer industry," Spindler said. "Our goal is to transform Apple into a multi-product, multi-business company. With that in mind, we have set up specific product business groups aimed at growing our core Macintosh computer business as well as creating new businesses based on new technologies. In addition, we have focused our geographies on the key markets of enterprises, education, small and medium businesses and the home.
"Ian's role will be to identify critical market solutions for specific market segments that can be leveraged across the world, and assure the company's resources are aligned to support them. In addition, he will be responsible for ensuring that pricing, forecasting, key marketing messages and global account management are driven in ways that increase demand for our products. By bringing Apple's geographic sales and marketing efforts together under Ian, we can leverage worldwide opportunities when appropriate, while maintaining geographically-managed operations."
In his new position, Diery will be responsible for all sales and marketing activities worldwide, as well as the corporation's marketing communications. Reporting to him will be Robert Puette, president of Apple USA; Soren Olsson, president of Apple Europe; the president of Apple Pacific, who will be named later; and Carl Gustin, senior director of corporate marketing communications. Diery will report to Spindler.
Diery, a native of Sydney, Australia, worked in the field of office equipment distribution until 1977 when he joined Wang Laboratories. During his 11-year career with Wang, he headed European and U.S. operations, rising to executive vice president, worldwide field operations. He joined Apple in 1989, and has been responsible for the company's marketing, sales and support efforts in Australia, Canada, Japan, the Far East and Latin America.
