APPLE ONLINE SERVICES ANNOUNCES NEW SERVICES AND EXPANDS APPLELINK

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- News, travel, weather, mobile computing and expanded online support from both Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) and third-party companies are some of the new service areas planned to be added this spring to AppleLink, Apple's 52,000-subscriber strong, global online communications and information service. This is among a number of announcements made today at the mobile93 Conference in San Jose by Apple Online Services, the electronic services business unit within Apple Computer's Personal Interactive Electronics (PIE) division.
Apple is planning to aggressively grow its electronic services business to design and develop value added services which will enable customers to communicate with each other worldwide, to gain access to a wide range of information, and to use transaction services such as travel bookings and banking. Future services are planned to be included with Macintosh personal computer systems, products in the Newton family and other Personal Digital Assistants.
"We have a strong presence in the area of mobile computing with products such as the Apple Macintosh PowerBook," said Peter Friedman, director, Apple Online Services. "Our efforts are not confined, however, to market leading hardware. Mobile professionals demand powerful yet easy to use communication and information services on a worldwide basis. Our AppleLink service meets these requirements today and is expanding beyond them with new content and services. Through leveraging Apple core technology, licensing agreements and partnerships, we plan to expand our portfolio of robust, fully featured yet easy to use electronic services delivered across multiple platforms."
In December, Apple announced that it will use technologies developed by America Online Inc. in future online information services that Apple will manage and market. The two companies also announced that they plan to work together to develop enhancements to the America Online services platform and to establish it as a standard.
Earlier this month, Apple announced that it intends to license General Magic's Telescript for use in electronic services products, as well as in other Apple products.
Apple Online Services is Apple's information services business unit and currently provides commercial information services such as AppleLink and AppleLink CD to 52,000 subscribers in 52 countries around the world.
NOTE: Apple, the Apple logo, and Macintosh are registered trademarks; and AppleLink and PowerBook are trademarks of Apple Computer Inc. America Online is a registered service mark of America Online Inc. Telescript is a trademark of General Magic.
