APPLE INTRODUCES NEW HIGH-PERFORMANCE, EASY-TO-USE SERVERS AND SERVICES

CUPERTINO, Calif., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The Enterprise Systems Division of Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) today introduced three new Apple Workgroup Servers offering significantly lower lifecycle costs due to their superior ease-of-use and administration. It also announced enhanced versions of AppleShare file and print services with enhanced performance and AppleSearch, a powerful new information access and retrieval service for Apple Macintosh personal computer workgroups.
The servers -- Apple Workgroup Server 60, the Apple Workgroup Server 80 and Apple Workgroup Server 95 -- are scheduled to be unveiled at a worldwide launch at the CeBIT Computer Fair, Hannover, Germany, on March 25, 1993. They provide competitive price/performance for workgroups ranging from five to hundreds. The Apple Workgroup Server 95 can be tuned either for optimal file and print performance or high-performance relational database use.
Apple has been working with leading database developers such as Oracle and ACI to ensure that their relational database software and tools are available at launch for the Apple Workgroup Server 95.
"The new Workgroup Server models are designed to provide extremely attractive price/performance and significantly better return on investment for a range of enterprises from K-12 school districts all the way through major industrial corporations," said Apple Computer Inc. Enterprise Systems Division vice president and general manager Morris Taradalsky.
Major Performance Boosts Make AppleShare 4.0 and AppleShare Pro
 Attractive Upgrades for Macintosh-mainly Workgroups
Apple simultaneously introduced two new versions of the company's easy-to-use AppleShare software for scalable, high-performance file and print services for Apple Macintosh-mainly workgroups.
The two new versions, AppleShare 4.0 and AppleShare Pro, are also scheduled to be officially unveiled at a worldwide product launch at CeBIT. According to Taradalsky, "These two new versions of AppleShare now give customers a wider range of file and print solutions. Now there are AppleShare products that can meet the performance and capacity needs of any-size Macintosh-mainly workgroup."
Support for DOS and Windows Systems
Apple also announced today that it intends to make available a new product, AppleTalk Connection for DOS and Windows, based on the PhoneNET PC product from Farallon Computing. This product will provide a cross-platform file and print solution for mixed Macintosh and PC workgroups.
AppleTalk Connection for DOS and Windows allows PC users to access files stored on the new Apple Workgroup Servers, as well as other AppleShare Servers. The software provides an AppleTalk network connection for Windows or DOS computers and allows them to access file servers and printers on the network. AppleTalk Connection for DOS and Windows supports Ethernet, LocalTalk and Token Ring networks.
AppleTalk Connection for DOS and Windows will be available worldwide from Apple. Farallon will continue to provide PhoneNET PC software as a part of its Timbuktu for Windows product. Timbuktu for Windows and Timbuktu for Macintosh provide peer-to-peer networking services, including file exchange and remote control.
AppleSearch Provides Sophisticated 'Natural Language' Queries on
Text-based Information, Providing Users with Personalized, Relevant
 Access
AppleSearch, announced today, is a major new workgroup technology aimed at giving Macintosh users personalized, easy access to large libraries of documents on file servers without having to learn complicated search commands. It combines features found on high-end bibliographic information retrieval software with Apple's traditional ease of use and administration. It uses a relevance-ranking algorithm to ensure the information retrieved is of most value for the user.
"AppleSearch is designed to deliver both easy access to unstructured information and a way to present that information that is personalized for individuals," said Taradalsky.
"The vast majority of information in any organization is not in structured databases but rather in memos, letters, reports and faxes stored on file servers. Prior to AppleSearch, users have had to choose between relatively unsophisticated single-user search tools and expensive, complex dedicated search and retrieval systems to find information. AppleSearch brings powerful information access to the mainstream of computing without the high-end price tag."
AppleSearch's powerful search engine uses natural-language requests to create "reporters" which search libraries of text-based server files on an AppleSearch server. The search results can be presented to the user in a variety of easy-to-understand and access formats.
