APPLE INTRODUCES HIGH-PERFORMANCE, LOW-COST ETHERNET CARD PRICES ON CONNECTIVITY BUNDLES REDUCED

CUPERTINO, Calif., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The Apple Business Systems (ABS) Division of Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) today announced the Apple Ethernet NB (NuBus) Twisted-Pair Card which offers superior performance over Ethernet networks at a competitive price. Effective today, Apple is also offering reduced prices on several of its connectivity bundles, providing customers with low-cost, high performance connectivity solutions for a variety of Macintosh computer systems.
"Apple is now offering a broad suite of high-performance and price competitive networking products," said Karen Quek, ABS product line manager. "The Ethernet NB Twisted-Pair Card was developed in response to our desire to offer our customers an even more cost effective solution for their 10Base-T networking needs."
The Ethernet NB Twisted-Pair Card includes a built-in, standard 10Base-T network port (RJ-45), which allows for quick and easy installation and network management. The star configuration of a 10Base-T network results in a highly reliable network which when coupled with pre-installed twisted-pair cabling, provides an optimal solution for twisted-pair Ethernet needs. The Ethernet NB Twisted-Pair Card also ships with highly optimized software for maximum performance that, in many cases, matches the throughput of Macintosh computers with built-in Ethernet.
For customers who require other forms of Ethernet media, such as thin coax or fiber, or need the flexibility of the AAUI port, Apple has reduced the price of bundles that include either the existing Ethernet LC or NB Card and a choice of Apple Ethernet media adapter (thin coax, twisted pair or AUI). The Apple Ethernet LC Card provides an affordable, high-speed networking solution for any Macintosh computer equipped with an LC PDS slot. These include the Classic II, Color Classic, Macintosh LC, LC II, LC III, LC 475, LC 520 and Macintosh Quadra 605 computers. The Apple Ethernet NB Card is an intelligent NuBus card for the Macintosh II and Quadra family of computers. The Ethernet product family also includes EtherTalk software for easy access to network services.
Apple Ethernet products are compliant with the IEEE 802.3 standard and can be used in any existing Ethernet environment including those running AppleTalk, DECnet, MacIPX or TCP/IP and are compatible with all existing network services and applications such as file servers, print servers, electronic mail and databases.
Apple is also reducing the price of its Token-Ring 4/16 NB card. The Apple Token Ring 4/16 NB Card complies with the IEEE 802.5 standard, and supports AppleTalk, SNA, or TCP/IP protocols. IBM compatibility is assured through the use of the IBM Token Ring chipset. The Apple Token Ring 4/16 NB Card includes TokenTalk software.
