APPLE DELIVERS VITAL TECHNICAL ARCHITECTURE GUIDES FOR CORPORATE IS PLANNING, DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

SAN ANTONIO, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Enterprise Systems Division of Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL), today launched the VITAL Technical Architecture Guides, a comprehensive source of information on VITAL, a platform-independent framework for the planning and development of client/server information systems that integrate the power of desktop technology while preserving existing technology investments. VITAL training is also being made available. The VITAL Technical Architecture Guides and training will be available initially to U.S. customers.
VITAL stands for Virtually Integrated Technical Architecture Lifecycle, a model that categorizes enterprise systems into four interrelated environments (desktop integration, data capture, data access and repository), and links these via a robust systems infrastructure. Based on a user-centric view of computing, VITAL is a blueprint for enterprise quality client/server systems. It can integrate incompatible hardware and software while providing data and transaction integrity in a consistent view to desktop users. It further allows information systems executives to extend the economic life of the systems they already have in place, and migrate to client/server environments.
"We have had a significant nine-month effort underway to completely update and revise the architecture guides originally developed in Apple's IS&T organization," said Morris Taradalsky, vice president and general manager, Apple Enterprise Systems division. "Developing introductory training to capture the technical essence and integrity of VITAL has been a challenge as well. This architecture is something customers will be able to work with for many years."
Comprised of a comprehensive set of six soft-cover guides -- one for each VITAL environment, plus introductory and supplemental volumes -- the VITAL Technical Architecture Guide contains the full specifications of the VITAL architecture, detailed design templates, guiding principles and information on how corporate IS professionals can implement VITAL within their own organization.
"Apple's enterprise customers are concerned about how to effectively migrate to the benefits of client/server computing via a cost-effective transition strategy. After viewing VITAL, most major customers conclude that the VITAL framework appears to be the best set of directions and software engineering techniques available in the marketplace. We expect to continue to fuel customer interest and deliver solutions to satisfy that demand," said Jerry Malec, vice president and general manager, AUSA Enterprise Markets division.
Also announced today by Apple USA is the formation of the VITAL Providers Program. Over the next two months, Apple will complete the qualification of systems integrators selected to provide fee-based VITAL training, as well as architecture and project consulting. Beginning in July, Bear River Associates, KPMG.ExIS, Martin Marietta Information Systems and RWD Technologies plan to offer VITAL training and consulting services to customers interested in implementing VITAL.
Also in July, a variety of training options will be available to IS professionals who would like to learn VITAL concepts, guidelines and techniques and strategies. Bear River Associates, KPMG.ExIS, Martin Marietta Information Systems and RWD Technologies plan to offer two training courses -- "The Fundamentals of VITAL" -- a one-day course focused on VITAL methodology and components; and "Architecting VITAL Systems" -- a three-day course that provides the IS professional with a detailed exploration of VITAL environments.
"Apple's delivery of VITAL Technical Architecture Guides has been a top priority for MacIS," said Jim Young, assistant to the chairman of EDS and president of the board of directors for MacIS, the largest independent organization of Macintosh IS executives. "That's because we see VITAL as a significant factor in addressing head-on the migration and integration issues facing information systems managers today."
Priced at $1500 per set and available immediately, VITAL Technical Architecture Guides will be distributed directly through Apple.
Corporate customers may contact their National Account Executive for more information on VITAL.
