APPLE DEBUTS GERMAN VERSION OF NEWTON MESSAGEPAD

BERLIN, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Apple Computer Inc. demonstrated the first non-English language version -- the German language version -- of its Newton MessagePad here at the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA). In a press conference, Gaston Bastiaens, vice president and general manager of Apple's Personal Interactive Electronics division, stated that the German language MessagePad was scheduled to reach the German marketplace this fall.
"In order to be a true personal assistant, the Newton MessagePad must understand the cultural nuances of its users," Bastiaens said. "As a result, bringing localized versions of Newton MessagePads to key international markets is a high priority for Apple. We plan to expand MessagePad availability into international markets beginning this fall, and anticipate aggressively bringing new versions to market in 1994."
Localized versions of the MessagePad are designed to go beyond displaying information in native languages -- they are designed to understand and respond to language, format, and communication patterns specific to different countries. For example, the localized MessagePads will be developed to recognize variations in national handwriting styles, as well as different ways of writing dates and times.
The next step in the international rollout of the Newton MessagePad will be its formal introduction in the United Kingdom scheduled for Sept. 16, at Live '93.
