APPLE COMPUTER INCREASES MOMENTUM IN JAPANESE PC MARKET; IDC RANKS APPLE AS NO. 2 PC VENDOR IN JAPAN

TOKYO, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- As one of Apple Computer Inc.'s (Apple)(NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) leading international markets with FY92 revenues exceeding $500 million, Apple Japan Inc. (Apple Japan) continues to forge ahead in the increasingly competitive Japanese PC marketplace. According to International Data Corp. (IDC), Apple is now the no. 2 personal computer vendor, commanding 8.8 percent unit market share. This represents an increase of 2.8 percent over the previous calendar year, and places Apple behind market leader NEC.
"This ranking further demonstrates Apple's market share momentum in one of the world's most important PC marketplaces -- Japan," said John Floisand, president of Apple Pacific. "We have worked hard to provide Japanese customers with localized solutions that meet their personal computing needs, and we will continue to work closely with our partners to ensure our continued success."
Led by President Shigechika Takeuchi and a Japanese management team, Apple Japan has aggressively pursued and met many needs of their customers. In addition to KanjiTalk 7, Apple's Japanese version of the System 7.0 operating system, nearly all of Apple's personal computing products have been localized for the Japanese market.
Furthermore, Apple has worked closely with third party software developers to penetrate the Japanese market. Today, over 800 third-party software applications have been localized and are available in Japan, bringing the total number of applications available to 1,000. This represents an increase of more than one hundred-fold since 1989.
Established in 1983, Apple Japan is based in Tokyo and is one of five subsidiaries comprising Apple Pacific, a geographic operating unit of Apple Computer.
Headquartered in Cupertino, Calif., Apple develops, manufactures and markets personal computer systems for use in business, education, science, engineering and government. A recognized pioneer and innovator in the personal computer industry, Apple does business in more than 120 countries. Apple has redefined computing to mean empowerment of the individual. Apple seeks through technology to provide people with easy and affordable access to information and computing power.
