APPLE COMPUTER: MUSIC, TECHNOLOGY AND THE ARTS CONVERGE AT BEN & JERRY'S WOMAD IN SAN FRANCISCO

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) today will showcase a range of its capabilities in multimedia and interactive technologies in a special technology demonstration area called FutureZone at Ben & Jerry's WOMAD festival. Ben and Jerry's WOMAD--World Of Music Art and Dance--is the first all- day music festival to include a significant high-tech component. The nine-city multicultural festival tour culminates in today's San Francisco show at Golden Gate Park, where 100,000 to 150,000 people are expected to attend.
Peter Gabriel--renowned for his cutting-edge music videos and cofounder of WOMAD--wanted to incorporate FutureZone into WOMAD because of his personal interest in state-of-the-art multimedia technology. "The aim of having technology at WOMAD is to inform and excite," says Gabriel. "Festival attendees are able to enter FutureZone and experience for themselves the interaction of music, technology and the arts. Apple has helped us make a wide audience aware of the interactive worlds people can experience today." Gabriel is developing his own Hi-Tech Real World Theme Park in Barcelona, Spain and will introduce a new CD-ROM title this year.
Apple, the largest participant in the FutureZone area, is showcasing interactive multimedia technologies that take advantage of its Apple Macintosh personal computers (see separate fact sheet). "Art and technology are a natural marriage with unlimited, exciting new possibilities," said Satjiv Chahil, vice president of Apple's New Media group. "Because Apple is at the forefront of multimedia, CD-ROM and interactive technologies, we're here today giving people the chance to express their creativity in whole new ways."
"The WOMAD festival brings together many talented artists from around the world," said Rick Smolan, photographer/author/producer of the "Day in the Life" books, who has assembled a team of photographers to cover WOMAD. "The 12 award-winning photographers selected to create 'The Digital Face' of WOMAD are very excited and proud to be part of this extraordinary group of artists.
"They are attempting to do something that's never been done before--to create a real-time digital record of an event as it unfolds. Within minutes after the images are shot they will be enlarged and mounted on a huge digital billboard. It's going to be a little like looking into a mirror with a 3-minute time delay."
"Technology comes full circle: from the camera to the computer to the printed page," said Russell Brown, senior art director of Adobe Systems, Inc. Brown is directing the team of graphic artists creating the giant billboard, which will be completely produced in just one day.
"The great thing about new technology is that it allows us as storytellers to tell greater and more fantastic stories," said Brett Leonard, director of Stephen King's "The Lawnmower Man" and Peter Gabriel's new music video, "Kiss That Frog." Leonard is directing real-time music videos at today's event, as well as creating an interactivc?e art piece.
