APPLE COMPUTER'S POWERCD IS SHIPPING

NEW YORK, June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- In March at the Cebit Computer Conference in Hannover Germany, the PIE Division at Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) announced the PowerCD -- Apple's new three-in-one CD- ROM drive. Today, Apple is pleased to announce that the PowerCD has now begun shipping in Europe.
The new three-in-one PowerCD player offers users a flexible, portable device for playing CD-ROM titles on a Macintosh, full functioning Kodak Photo
CD connected to a television or Macintosh, and audio-Fompact discs. This small, light-weight unit gives users the flexibility to access a variety of types of CD technology, whether at home, in the office, or on the go.
Apple has been a leader in driving multimedia technology into the mainstream. With the introduction of breakthrough technologies such as QuickTime to our current efforts to dramatically grow the base of CD-ROM users to over 1.5 million users by year end, Apple is at the forefront of this technology. PowerCD is yet another step in this effort in that it combines the powerful desktop CD-ROM technology with the simplicity and uniqueness of television-top Photo CD technology.
 PowerCD Capabilities
PowerCD has a built-in SCSI port to enable users to connect their Macintosh desktop or PowerBook computer and use it as CD-ROM drive. With PowerCD, using CD-ROMs for business presentations, referencing databases, photo archiving, interactive learning, or playing games has never been easier.
Photo CD Images On Your Television
Using a video cable, users can connect their PowerCD player to their television and have instant access to photographic images stored on single and multisession Kodak Photo CD discs. With the remote control that comes with the PowerCD, users can view those images in any order, as well as zoom in, rotate and crop them. A Photo CD image is a digitized version of a 35 mm photograph or negative that a user can also open and view on the Macintosh computer screen. With the PowerCD drive and a Macintosh computer running Apple QuickTime multimedia software, a user can access high-quality images, cut, copy, and paste the images into documents, and edit them using Macintosh graphics applications.
 Playing Audio CDs
Connecting directly to a user's stereo system or through headphones, the PowerCD becomes a high-quality music CD player. Users can program selections in the order they want and use the remote control to search for their favorite song.
 Pricing, Availability and Distribution
The PowerCD US price is $499 SRP and will be shipping this week in Europe with US and Pacific availability currently scheduled for the end of July 1993. Distribution of the PowerCD will be through authorized Apple resellers, consumer channels as well as the Apple Catalog.
