APPLE COMPUTER'S PIE DIVISION ANNOUNCES NEW CROSS-PLATFORM MULTIMEDIA AUTHORING TOOLS AT DIGITAL WORLD '93

LOS ANGELES, June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of Apple's Personal Interactive Electronics (PIE) Division's strategy to develop the electronic media market, the PIE Division announced the first in a family of digital publishing tools that simplify the process for developers to create compelling multimedia titles. The Apple Media Kit is a central component of PIE's broad publishing initiatives and is designed to streamline the content production process.
"The Apple Media Kit is designed to preserve publisher's investment in content. Tools must support multiple platforms and standards so that the digital publishing market can grow. Today, creating multimedia content is cumbersome. Central to PIE's tools strategy is the Apple Media Kit, a tool that is designed to provide structure to the production process so creative teams can focus on their individual strengths," said Gaston Bastiaens, vice president and general manager of Apple's PIE Division.
Through QuickTime, Apples multimedia system software standard, products developed with the Apple Media Kit can playback on computers using both the Microsoft Windows and Macintosh operating systems. The PIE Division also intends to support ScriptX, the multimedia software standard being developed by Kaleida Labs, in future versions of the Apple Media Kit.
 The Apple Media Kit
Apple Media Kit includes two tools, the Apple Media Tool, and the Apple Media Tool Programming Environment. Both tools are designed to work together for cross-platform multimedia development for creative artists and creative programmers.
 The Apple Media Tool
The Apple Media Tool includes the tools creative people need to assemble and produce interactive multimedia projects. The tools allow users to assemble media elements and add interactive features without writing a single line of code. Team members can also use object-based authoring, so prototypes can be generated easily for an entire project using rough-draft media elements. Additionally, the tool preserves interactive connections when finished media elements are substituted for rough-draft media elements.
 Apple Media Tool Programming Environment
The Apple Media Tool Programming Environment includes everything programmers need to customize and extend the capabilities of projects developed using the Apple Media Tool. This environment includes both a new programming language and a new application framework. For developers, it offers three advantages: It combines the power of an object-oriented programming language with the ease of use of a scripting language; it makes the project code portable between Macintosh computers and personal computers running Microsoft Windows; and it provides access to both Macintosh and Microsoft Windows toolboxes through a C language interface.
Jude Angius, who runs the Los Angeles Times Media Lab said, "Apple Media Tool is easier to use than many others. Projects may be stored as templates and media added later, allowing fast production of multimedia products for several different computer platforms and interactive TV. Apple Media Tool is used for final assembly of media created in other programs such as Macromedia Director, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Photoshop, SoundEdit Pro and VIDI Presenter Professional. We see this as an exciting tool for creating products under tight deadlines common to newspapers."
"The Los Angeles Times, the nation's largest metropolitan daily newspaper, recognizes the need to adapt to a wide variety of electronic platforms for distribution of news and information," according to Terry Schwadron, Deputy Managing Editor, who heads the editorial development efforts. "The Times seeks to be a primary information source," he said.
