APPLE CEO JOHN SCULLEY VISITS CAMPUS WHERE THE MACINTOSH DEBUTED FOR
 DREXEL UNIVERSITY'S CENTENNIAL COMMENCEMENT
Visiting the campus where the Apple Macintosh first made its debut in higher education eight years ago, Apple Computer Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Sculley will speak on the future of education and technology at Drexel University's 1992 commencement on Sunday, June 14.
The event, to be held 2 p.m. at the Philadelphia Civic Center, will mark the conclusion of Drexel's year-long Centennial observance.
Drexel made headlines around the world in March 1984 when its students became the first to get their hands on the Mac, perhaps the most influential computer of the past decade. Today, some 13,000 Macintoshes are used by students, faculty and staff at Drexel, the first U.S. university to require all incoming students to have a personal computer.
Sculley will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree before addressing 10,000 faculty, alumni, guests, and students, including 2,000 bachelors, masters, and doctoral graduates. Sculley's keynote speech will be on "Education and Technology: Charting a Course for the Century Ahead."
Sculley joined Apple as CEO in 1983, and was named chairman in 1986 and chief technology officer in 1990. He was instrumental in unveiling the Macintosh computer line, which has established Apple as a leader in the personal computer industry, helping to generate revenues of $6.31 billion in fiscal 1991.
Besides Sculley, Drexel will confer honorary degrees to: Elaine L. Chao, director of the Peace Corps; Drexel alumna Elaine M. Garzarelli, director of sector analysis at Shearson Lehman Brothers; Drexel alumnus C.R. Chuck Pennoni, president of Pennoni Associates Inc., a Philadelphia consulting engineering firm; and Bernard C. Watson, president and CEO of the William Penn Foundation.
CONTACT: Dave Mueller of Drexel University, 215-895-2705 (also throughout weekend).
