CUPERTINO, Calif., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/-- Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) today announced the availability of the Apple Macintosh System Update, version 2.0.1. Formerly distributed under the product name Hardware System Update, the name change reflects the expanded scope of this product. The Macintosh System Update will be upgraded regularly to offer software improvements that meet the ongoing needs of Macintosh users. System Update 2.0.1 contains enhancements and bug fixes to Macintosh System 7.1 and System 7 Pro software. While the key features of System Update 2.0.1 have been included in System 7 Pro, this update provide additional enhancements for System 7 Pro customers, including updated versions of HD SC Setup and Apple Disk First Aid. System Update 2.0.1 requires Macintosh System Software versions 7.1 or System 7 Pro, and is not intended for Macintosh Performa users.
System Update 2.0.1 delivers considerable new functionality while incorporating appropriate enhancements from previous Hardware System Updates. The primary additional enhancements provided by System Update 2.0.1 are as follows.
-- Includes Apple HD SC Setup version 7.2.2, which provides users with overall increased reliability and more flexibility to format large Apple hard disks between 1 and 2 gigabytes.
-- Improves font memory management. Prior to this update it was possible for all of a user's fonts to be loaded into RAM during booting. This has been corrected so only those fonts needed will be in RAM after booting, freeing up considerable amounts of RAM on affected machines.
-- Includes AutoRemounter 1.2. This release significantly reduces network traffic compared to version 1.0.
-- Includes Apple Disk First Aid version 7.2, which includes a revised, easier to use interface, and many other improvements.
-- Updates the Macintosh PowerBook Control Panel to version 7.1.3 and Express Modem software to version 1.1.2, which includes support for communications software that does not use the Apple Communications Toolbox.
-- Updates System Enabler 131 (version 1.0.3) for the PowerBook 160, 165, 165c, and 180 to support 12-inch monitors and improve reliability.
