APPLE ANNOUNCES ENHANCED VERSIONS OF APPLESHARE FOR OPTIMUM FILE SERVER PERFORMANCE

 CUPERTINO, Calif., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The Enterprise Systems Division of Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) today introduced two new versions of the company's easy-to-use AppleShare software that offer scalable high-performance file and print services for workgroups of Apple Macintosh personal computers.
 The two new versions, AppleShare 4.0 and AppleShare Pro, are scheduled to be officially unveiled at a worldwide product launch at CeBIT, Hannover, Germany, on March 25, along with the new Apple Workgroup Servers. According to Apple Computer Inc. Enterprise Systems Division vice-president and general manager, Morris Taradalsky, "These two new versions of AppleShare give customers a wider range of file and print solutions. Now there are AppleShare products that are designed to meet the performance and capacity needs of any size Macintosh workgroup.
 "AppleShare 4.0 and AppleShare Pro are targeted at Macintosh-mostly workgroups and provide support for DOS and Windows clients as well.
 "Combining the new versions of AppleShare with our new Workgroup Servers will provide powerful solutions that feature reduced lifecycle costs due to their overall ease of use."
 According to a study by the Business Research Group, a Boston-based computer consultancy, AppleShare servers were significantly less expensive to manage over a one-year period than comparable file and print solutions on other platforms.(A)
 The study concluded that ease-of-use could be directly translated to significantly lower lifecycle costs, thereby improving overall return on investment for the initial hardware and software expenditure.
 The AppleShare Family: Apple's Scalable, Integrated Solution for Workgroup Collaboration Apple provides a powerful, scalable file service solution for workgroups ranging in size from two to thousands. Apple provides superior levels of collaboration support through the Macintosh System 7 operating system and its File Sharing capabilities for small workgroups, all the way through to the new AppleShare Pro for large workgroups or groups that have intensive file and print requirements.
 Every Macintosh personal computer is equipped with Macintosh peer- to-peer File Sharing that allows ad hoc, on-demand sharing of information among Macintosh users. This total compatibility from serverless networks to Apple's new Apple Workgroup Servers provides seamless scalability with a uniform access methodology that extends to internetworks with hundreds of servers. Apple's networking software and operating system have been designed from the ground up to provide this superior level of integration and functionality.
 Along with System 7 Macintosh File Sharing, the AppleShare file and print family consists of:
 AppleShare 3.0, which Apple intends to continue shipping as an economical solution for customers looking for an inexpensive way to build a centralized file/print server. AppleShare 3.0 can turn any Macintosh computer into a network server, supporting 120 concurrent user logons with up to 15 highly active users (that is, users constantly reading from or writing to the server).
 (A) BRG's methodology is based on an analysis of the costs involved in managing typical server tasks. The costs were calculated based on a LAN administrator's annual salary. BRG's list of 11 commonly performed tasks were chosen as being representative of common network functions performed in any PC LAN environment, regardless of the operating system environment. The tasks included in the study were: Add User account; Change User Account; Add a Network Server; Add a Network-Wide Service (e.g. Email, Fax, etc.); Move/Change a Network-Wide Service; Add a Network Printer; Add a New LAN Segment; Connect 2 Remote Networks; Upgrade NOS/Utilities at Server; Upgrade NOS/Utilities at Desktop; Install Network Version of Application Software. The cost savings cited in the study will obviously vary from site to site.
 AppleShare 4.0 is a higher-performance version of AppleShare tuned for the Motorola 68040 microprocessor. Designed for small- to medium- sized workgroups, AppleShare 4.0 will run on the new Apple Workgroup Server 60 and 80, as well as Macintosh Centris 610, Macintosh Quadra 700, 800 and 950. AppleShare 4.0 boosts server performance to two or more times that of AppleShare 3.0.
 AppleShare 4.0 supports 150 concurrent user logons with up to 30 highly active users. In keeping with Apple's philosophy of ease of use, the company intends to pre-install AppleShare on the new Apple Workgroup Server 60 and Apple Workgroup Server 80 (see separate Apple Workgroup Server release). These servers will almost be ready for work straight out of the box, with little additional set-up and configuration.
 The flagship product, AppleShare Pro, runs on the new Apple Workgroup Server 95. It provides the highest performance of the three for demanding file service environments. AppleShare Pro exploits the new Apple Workgroup Server 95 hardware acceleration and the high performance features of its tuned version of A/UX 3.0.1 operating system to deliver up to four times the maximum performance of AppleShare 3.0.
 AppleShare Pro is intended for larger workgroups. It supports up to 200 concurrent user logons with up to 50 highly active users. AppleShare Pro is also appropriate for workgroups that place more intensive demands on the server by moving large data files around the network. Although it employs the high performance features of A/UX, AppleShare Pro maintains the intuitive System 7 interface, providing a user environment that is extremely powerful, yet remarkably easy to set up, administer and use.
 All three versions of AppleShare are fully compatible with each other and, taken as a whole product family, provide a smooth, scalable solution from peer-to-peer networks using System 7 File Sharing all the way through to internets with hundreds of servers using AppleShare.
 In addition, users access file and print services through the same consistent, easy-to-use mechanism, the Chooser. PowerBook users can access AppleShare networks using AppleTalk Remote Access to provide seamless connectivity for mobile clients.
 Powerful, Integrated Server Technology
 Both AppleShare 4.0 and AppleShare Pro use new software caching techniques to accelerate file-server performance. These enhancements include file, directory and icon caches, which speed up all facets of server access. All three caches can be modified to tune the server for optimal performance, depending on the needs of the workgroup.
 Because AppleShare Pro is built on A/UX 3.0.1, it has several advantages not available in AppleShare 4.0:
 -- Asynchronous input/output: allows reads from and writes to disk to overlap, significantly improving performance;
 -- A/UX file system caching: holds recently used files ready for instant recall, cutting the time the user has to wait for a response from the server;
 -- Up to 5000 open files and 20 connected SCSI devices: meets the capacity needs of larger workgroups.
 Cross Platform Support
 Apple also announced today that it intends to make available a new product, AppleTalk Connection for DOS and Windows, based on the PhoneNET PC product from Farallon Computing. This product will provide a cross platform file and print solution for mixed Macintosh and PC workgroups.
 AppleTalk Connection for DOS and Windows allows PC users to access files stored on the new Apple Workgroup Servers, as well as other AppleShare Servers. The software provides an AppleTalk network connection for Windows or DOS computers and allows them to access file servers and printers on the network. AppleTalk Connection for DOS and Windows supports Ethernet, LocalTalk and Token Ring networks.
 AppleTalk Connection for DOS and Windows will be available worldwide from Apple. Farallon will continue to provide PhoneNET PC software as a part of its Timbuktu for Windows product. Timbuktu for Windows and Timbuktu for Macintosh provide peer-to-peer networking services, including file exchange and remote control.
 Pricing and Availability
 AppleShare Pro is currently scheduled to carry a suggested retail price of $2,399 in the United States and should be available worldwide by the end of April. AppleShare 4.0 is scheduled to ship this summer at a suggested retail price of $1,899. AppleShare 3.0 continues to ship at a suggested retail price of $1,199. Pricing will vary worldwide.
