APPLE AND SHARP ANNOUNCE JOINT LICENSE AND DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT
 FOR NEW PERSONAL DIGITAL ASSISTANT
OSAKA, Japan, March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Sharp Corp. today announced a joint license and development agreement for a new Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) product in the personal information device category. Sharp is the first licensee of a new Apple software technology and will partner with Apple to develop the first commercial PDA product in this class.
PDA is a term defined last January by Apple's chairman and chief executive officer John Sculley at his keynote address for the Consumer Electronics Show. Sculley described a new category of easy- to-use information devices using digital technology to bridge the gap between current personal computers and consumer electronics products.
"Apple and Sharp are a tremendous pair," said John Sculley, Apple's chairman and CEO, "and we bring complementary strengths to this project. Sharp is renown for its personal equipment development and device technologies. And Apple is the acknowledged industry leader in creating innovative software that makes technology easy-to- use and widely accessible.
"Strategic partnerships like this one will be the key to business success as the gap between personal computers and consumer electronics products continues to close," Sculley said.
"Beyond the synergistic effort of both companies' technology and business, the partnership is significant in the sense that it lives up to the spirit of real global business partnerships between Japan and the U.S.," said H. Tsuji, president of Sharp Corp. "This includes import sales of products, as well as all the categories of development, manufacturing and distribution of software and hardware technology. I am firmly convinced that this combination realizes a partnership which will enable us to pursue extensive possibilities for the future."
Both companies have formed project teams and have begun aggressive product development efforts with a target product delivery date of early 1993. Further product details were not made available at this time.
Separately, Apple Computer Inc., Japan and Sharp Systems Products, a system products sales subsidiary in Japan of Sharp Corp., have agreed that Sharp System Products will have the rights to distribute Macintosh personal computers in Japan beginning April, 1992.
