APPLE, UNITED DATA SIGN MACWORKSTATION LICENSE AGREEMENT

APPLE, UNITED DATA SIGN MACWORKSTATION LICENSE AGREEMENT
CUPERTINO, Calif., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) and United Data Corp. today announced they have signed an agreement under which United Data will license the source code for Apple's MacWorkStation product line and will provide services to existing MacWorkStation customers. The agreement will ensure cross- platform products and support are available for customers of the Apple Terminal Services (ATS) technology.
MacWorkStation is an ATS-based server application that runs on Apple's Macintosh personal computer. United Data's Any Language Any Computer (ALAC) server products for DOS and Windows, and Integrated Solutions' Xmws products for VAX/VMS and UNIX, are ATS servers for other popular platforms.
An ATS-based server provides display services -- including user interface objects (pull-down menus, windows, dialogs) and filing and printing functions -- to the client application in the desktop machine's native graphical user interface. In addition, client software may be written in any language and run on any host or personal computer connected to a network using a wide variety of communications protocols. These design features make ATS-based client/server solutions easy to learn and easy to use in a variety of host and desktop environments.
Jim Groff, director of marketing for Apple Computer's Enterprise Systems Division, said, "By licensing MacWorkStation source code rights to United Data, Apple is providing for the continued development of the ATS technology. We believe that United Data's established role as an ATS solutions provider puts it in an excellent position to offer quality products and support to Apple's existing MacWorkStation customers. We are also pleased that several of the most popular ATS server platforms are now supported by a single vendor."
Irving Greisman, president of United Data Corporation, said, "This agreement will help us provide a better product to our customer base. By adding the Macintosh products to our ALAC DOS and Windows lines, United Data now offers the broadest range of cross-platform server support based on the ATS protocol. United Data can now provide a complete solution for heterogeneous environments that include Macintosh and DOS computers."
Apple's MacWorkStation will be renamed by United Data, becoming ALAC for the Macintosh and complementing United Data's ALAC for Windows and ALAC for DOS.
United Data will offer ALAC for Macintosh products worldwide beginning Jan. 15. These products, formerly available from Apple through APDA, Apple's source for developer tools, include: MacWorkStation 3.1, Dialog Builder 1.0b1, Event Handler 1.0b1, and MacWorkStation 3270 Communications Module. Current customers of these products are encouraged to contact United Data directly for information about products and services. United Data will also offer an ATS Client Developer's Kit for a range of host platforms, including Macintosh, DEC, UNIX, Tandem, IBM, Sun, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft Windows, DOS and Netware.
APDA will continue to offer Apple's MacWorkstation 3.1 Documentation Kit and MacWorkStation 3.1 Quick-Reference Card (3-Pack) until United Data offers revised versions of these products. APDA, which also offers third-party products, will continue to offer United Data's ALAC for Windows, Tribase Corporation's MacWorkStation Client Toolkit for VAX/VMS and Ramsay Consulting's telnet.PM version 2.0. These products are available to customers worldwide by contacting APDA at 800-282-2732 (United States) or 408-562-3910 (outside the United States), or via the AppleLink address "APDA."
Customer services available from United Data include: Custom ATS EXEC modules, which provide extensions to the basic ATS server, ATS Consulting and ATS Training. Customers and developers who have created applications based on the ATS protocol may receive information about the now-forming ATS User Group by contacting Bill Redmond, State of Michigan Legislature at 517-373-2253.
