APPLE, SONY AND KODAK ANNOUNCE RELEASE OF JOINTLY-SPONSORED CD-ROM CD-ROM TITLE OPEN WIDER BRINGS MAGAZINE TO LIFE

CAMPBELL, Calif., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), Eastman Kodak Co. (NYSE: EK) and Sony Electronic Publishing today announced the release of a jointly-sponsored CD-ROM title called Open Wider. Created by New York-based multimedia design company Imergy, Open Wider documents the assembly of Open, a magazine that explores creativity in the digital age. Open Wider is an interactive CD-ROM that brings the making of Open to life while expanding its content through sound, animation, video and still photography. It is also intended to be an educational tool for magazine and book publishers, advertisers, and universities, offering insight into the future of publishing.
Ninety-nine leading magazine editors, writers, designers and photographers gathered in New York for just one week this spring to create Open magazine, a one-time-only collaborative effort. In keeping with its subject matter, Open was produced using state-of-the-art desktop publishing methods. Participants included staff from Time, Newsweek, National Geographic, Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, Travel & Leisure and other national publications. Imergy worked side-by-side with Open staff during the magazine's production process to gather footage and content for the CD-ROM.
"Successful publishers in the 21st century will likely be publishing both in print and electronically," said Jonathan Seybold, chairman and CEO of Seybold Publications and Seybold Seminars. "It is vitally important that they start now to learn what it will take to deliver information and advertising in new forms." Seybold is widely regarded as one of the leading experts in electronic publishing technology.
The three sponsors each played a key role in the production of Open Wider. All of the photos used in the CD-ROM were first stored on Kodak Photo CD, then accessed from Photo CD and incorporated into the CD-ROM. Open Wider was designed and produced entirely on Apple Macintosh computers. Sony helped in the final stages by manufacturing the CDs and contributing the jewel case packaging.
Imergy President Flora Perskie, whose company also worked on the highly-acclaimed Kodak Photo CD title From Alice to Ocean, describes Open Wider as "a sampling of different approaches to electronic publishing." While one portion features a QuickTime movie in which an industry visionary is interviewed, another segment combines still photography, narration and text to bring to life a feature article about high-tech learning center Stuyvesant High School. Yet another is a 360- degree panoramic tour of the newsroom and an animated walking tour of the production process.
The CD is divided into six sections. The first section is a recap of stories in the magazine; the second takes a more in-depth look at some of those stories; the third offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the magazine was put together; the fourth introduces the editorial team behind Open; the fifth section features publishing visionaries talking about the future of electronic publishing; and the final section is a preview of ways to advertise in an electronic medium.
Open Wider will be first available for full-length viewing at Digital World '93, June 23 through 25 in Los Angeles. Cowles Business Media, title sponsor of the Open magazine project and publisher of Folio: magazine, will showcase the CD at its own tradeshow this fall. Other key Open magazine sponsors, including the Magazine Publishers Association and the Society of Magazine Publishers, will mail Open Wider to members. Discs also will be distributed to those colleges and universities which emphasize computer science, journalism, photography and graphic design.
Apple Computer, Inc. plans to incorporate Open Wider into seminars given at Apple Market Centers across the country as an instructive tool for users interested in publishing and design. Kodak plans to distribute the disc to its field sales organization for use as a sales tool and as a CD-ROM demonstration vehicle at tradeshows. Sony Electronic Publishing will also use Open Wider to demonstrate CD-ROM technology at trade shows and exhibitions.
"CD-ROM creates a new dimension in publishing because it is easy to use, can present information in a more lively, interactive way, and can house entire libraries on a single permanent disc," said Perskie. "More and more homes, businesses and schools are purchasing CD-ROM drives, providing publishers with an opportunity to reach a broader audience."
