APPLE'S SECOND HALF EARNINGS TO BE LOWER THAN EXPECTED

CUPERTINO, Calif. June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) today announced that it anticipates earnings for the second half of its current fiscal year will be below its earnings in the same period a year ago, and below the company's previous expectations. The company said that while unit shipments for its flagship Macintosh personal computer brand continue to be strong, an extremely aggressive pricing environment is leading to gross margins that are lower than the company previously expected.
"According to published industry reports, Macintosh continues to gain market share in a very competitive industry," said John Sculley, Apple's chairman and chief executive officer. "However, our growth in unit shipments is coming at lower prices than we previously expected -- and this will diminish our profitability during the second half of the fiscal year.
"Going forward," Sculley said, "we remain committed to our strategy of market share growth, and we will be taking aggressive actions to accelerate sales momentum for our Macintosh products. Additionally, we will be taking appropriate actions to position the company for earnings growth even as we absorb lower gross margins."
Sculley said that Apple continues to offer superior products, a strong brand name, and enjoys a leadership position in a number of key segments of the personal computer market. In the first half of Apple's fiscal year, Macintosh unit shipments increased 35 percent, and the company introduced more new products than it had in all of fiscal 1992. In addition, the company is expanding into new businesses. In March, Apple introduced the WorkGroup Server family of file servers, and later this summer the company expects to announce its first personal digital assistant.
