 APPLE'S ESD MOVES TO ENHANCE,
 STREAMLINE ENGINEERING, MARKETING CAPABILITIES
CUPERTINO, Calif.. July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- In a move designed to streamline and enhance its ability to deliver superior connectivity, open systems and Information Systems (IS) integration products, the Enterprise Systems Division (ESD) of Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) has reorganized into three business units: Server and Services, Open Systems, Integration Technologies, as well as a Strategy and Operations unit.
Each of these units will be lead by a director reporting to ESD vice president and general manager Morris Taradalsky.
"Whereas the former structure delineated between marketing and engineering efforts, the three new units will integrate engineering development, product marketing, project leadership and business management activities," Taradalsky said. In addition the Strategy and Operations group will be key in driving ESD and Apple-wide initiatives as well as providing centralized ESD support to the three business units.
"As a market driven organization, this change is designed to enhance our responsiveness to customer requirements and heighten our ability to deliver elegant, easy to use and configure, connectivity, integration and interoperability solutions for clients in all markets."
According to Taradalsky, staffing levels within ESD are expected to remain as they are today.
The responsibilities of each group will be as follows:
-- The Strategy and Operations group will drive Apple's Virtually Integrated Technical Architecture Lifecycle (VITAL), divisional Apple Quality Management (AQM) initiatives and provide overall ESD product marketing support for Apple USA, Apple Pacific and Apple Europe. In addition it will provide support for ESD publications, human interface designs, support and training, standards initiatives, systems engineering services, software licensing and other central management functions.
-- Server and Services will focus on both integrated hardware and software server-based solutions as well as software service for the Apple Macintosh personal computer and other platforms.
-- Open Systems will concentrate on providing systems platforms based on open system standards and specifications. The group's objectives include driving traditional Macintosh operating system functionality and ease of use into the open systems market as well as to develop an integrated PowerOpen client/server platform.
-- Integration Technologies has a charter encompassing connectivity architectures and tools as well as IS development architecture and tools. It will develop and market products and solutions aimed at helping customers and developers better integrate their desktop environments with other system environments.
