APOGEE SEES LOWER FOURTH QUARTER NET; FULL YEAR TO BE BELOW YEAR EARLIER FORECAST

MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Refining its earlier estimates that fiscal 1993 earnings would be well below fiscal 1992, Apogee Enterprises, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: APOG) indicated today that earnings for the fourth quarter ending Feb. 27, 1993 are expected to be below prior- year levels, primarily as a result of continued weak nonresidential construction markets.
"At this point, it appears fourth quarter results will be reduced due to the light volume and thin margins that our construction-related businesses have struggled with all year. Accordingly, we may not do much better than break even for the quarter," said Donald W. Goldfus, chairman and chief executive officer. For the first three quarters of fiscal 1993, Apogee reported earnings of $4.3 million, or 32 cents per share. In the 1992 fiscal fourth quarter, Apogee earned $1.6 million, or 12 cents per share.
Goldfus noted that, despite the lingering weakness in fiscal 1993, he sees some signs of encouragement for fiscal 1994. He cited Apogee's previously reported 44 percent increase in third-quarter backlog, as well as good prospects for international business, continued progress in the company's auto glass and other non-construction businesses, and the nation's early economic recovery, as the basis for his optimism.
