APOGEE ANNOUNCES NIEDERHOFER RETIREMENT

MINNEAPOLIS, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Apogee Enterprises, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: APOG) today reported that Laurence J. Niederhofer, 61, will retire as chief executive officer of Apogee's Window Fabrication Division, effective August 1, 1993. Niederhofer indicated he plans to remain an active director of the company, but will also retire as vice chairman of the board at that time.
"All of us at Apogee are grateful for the major contributions Larry has made over the past three decades here," said Donald W. Goldfus, Apogee's chairman and chief executive officer. "He possesses one of the finest business minds not only in our company, but in American industry. I look forward to benefiting from his continuing counsel as a director."
Niederhofer started with Apogee in 1961 as the company's controller. He was named treasurer in 1964. In 1968, he was appointed president of Wausau Metals Corporation, Wausau, Wis., a fabricator of premium commercial and institutional aluminum windows, acquired by Apogee that year. In the ensuring 25 years, Niederhofer led the expansion of the Wausau window product line, adding Nanik venetian blinds, new anodizing and painting capabilities and building the division to $75 million in sales last year.
Goldfus said no further changes in management within the division are anticipated in the near term. John Paprocki, who has been president of the division's architectural related companies since 1992, will continue in that position. Susan Lang will continue as president and general manager of the Nanik Window Coverings Group.
