APL ADDS SANTA FE RAILWAY TO STACKTRAIN SYSTEM; NEW CARRIER WILL SUPPORT FUTURE GROWTH, FLEXIBILITY

OAKLAND, Calif., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- APL Land Transport Services (APL) has announced that it will make the Santa Fe Railway one of its underlying carriers. The decision reflects the company's strategic desire to develop working relationships will all major U.S. railroads, according to Dan Pendleton, vice president of stacktrain operations.
Pendleton said the company will derive two principal benefits from broadening the carrier base. "APL will be ensuring adequate stacktrain capacity so we can meet the long-term volume growth of our domestic and international customers on key corridors," he said. "Also, access to multiple service offerings can mean additional scheduling and logistical flexibility."
Santa Fe's train operations for APL commenced the week of Dec. 13, with the railroad providing underlying carriage for one of the seven weekly stacktrains the company offers -- in both directions -- between Los Angeles and the Midwest. Pendleton noted that the Union Pacific, with which APL has a very strong relationship, remains the principal carrier for APL in that corridor.
APL, which operates an inventory of more than 18,000 domestic containers and chassis, is the largest single stacktrain operator. Its stacktrain network provides direct service to 100 major North American markets that are connected -- through agreements with underlying rail carriers -- by more than 20,000 miles of track. The major railroads with which APL maintains service agreements are the UP, Chicago and North Western, Conrail, Southern Pacific, Norfolk Southern, Canadian National, Ferrocarriles Nacionales de Mexico and now the Santa Fe.
"Santa Fe will provide APL with a high degree of service reliability," said Jack Fields, Santa Fe's assistant vice president-intermodal sales and service. "We look forward to working together."
For domestic shippers, APL offers its stacktrain services through a network of selected intermodal marketing companies, including its own. Its services are available to international shippers through various shipping lines, including its own affiliate, American President Lines. APL Land Transport Services is part of the American President Companies (NYSE: APS) group, which provides container transportation services in North America, Asia and the Middle East, through an intermodal system combining ocean, rail and truck transportation.
