APHA takes action on public health issues.

APHA has taken action on many other public health issues in recent weeks, including legislation that would punish those who help a minor cross state lines to obtain an abortion. Among its recent advocacy work, APHA:

* called on congressional lawmakers to support funding to low-income countries so that they may work toward meeting Millennium Development Goals. Adopted in 1990, the goals call for measures such as eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, achieving primary education and reducing child mortality. APHA sent a letter and copy of its 2005 policy on the issue to key House and Senate committees in July.

* urged lawmakers to vote against a bill that would punish those who help a minor cross state lines to obtain an abortion. The Child Custody Protection Act, known as S. 403 and H.R. 748, is unconstitutional and would deter young pregnant women from seeking guidance from trusted adults, according to a letter sent by APHA in July.
