AOX ANNOUNCES COREMODEM FAMILY OF DSP-BASED DATA/FAX MODEM DESIGNS AND SOFTWARE

WALTHAM, Mass., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Aox, Incorporated, the leading developer of system enhancement products today announced the CoreModem Family of data/fax modem designs and software, which allows personal computer system and peripheral manufacturers to easily incorporate digital signal processing (DSP) technology into new generation products. Optimized for Analog Devices' ADSP-21XX DSPs, Aox's CoreModem technology implements high-end CCITT modulation protocol standards for data/fax modems and supports PC/AT and PCMCIA platforms.
"DSP technology, which provides great functionality and flexibility at a low cost, will be a standard component in next generation PCs and peripherals," said Michael Aronson, Aox's chairman and founder. "With its extensive custom engineering work for OEMs, Aox can provide PC system and peripherals manufacturers with the necessary tools to bring DSP-based communications products to market quickly and inexpensively."
The Coremodem family for data/fax modems is designed around Aox's programmable "soft-modem" architecture, which allows flexibility and extensibility. The data modem software supports a wide range of standard transmission speeds, from Bell 212A, the U.S. standard for 1,200 bps, to V.32 bis, the CCITT worldwide high-end standard which transmits at 14,400 bps. The fax modem software is also available in a variety of transmission speeds, from V.21 (300bps) to the high-end standard V.17 (14,400 bps). Both the data and fax modem software support V.42 error correction and V.42bis data compression.
Aox will license the data/fax modem algorithms and provide OEMs with reference designs for the following: PC/AT add-on board data/fax modem, PC/AT stand-alone data/fax modem, and PCMCIA Release 2.0 Type II compatible data/fax modem. The PC/AT design provides the flexibility for incorporation into a complete system board or can serve as a board-level product for "aftermarket" sales opportunities.
Aox's strategy is to provide OEMs with a single source for the integration of DSPs into new generation products by offering both hardware and software solutions. In addition to its data/fax modem products, Aox will also offer audio, digital telephony and video acceleration solutions. Aox also offers custom design services and unique DSP implementation solutions to PC systems and peripherals manufacturers.
DSPs are essentially high-speed microprocessors optimized for specific data intensive operations. With its low cost and high performance, DSP technology makes an unprecedented range of new applications possible on personal computers. DSP technology can replace fixed-function cards to deliver data/fax modem, audio, digital telephone and video acceleration functions to PC systems and peripherals more easily than ever. The programmability of DSPs means that such products can be enhanced, upgraded or even entirely redesigned via software. The opportunities to provide multiple functionality in one unit are virtually unlimited.
Analog Devices' ADSP-21XX 16-bit, fixed point DSP family provides a range of integration levels, affording the flexibility to meet a variety of design and budget requirements.
Founded in 1977, Aox Incorporated is an engineering company dedicated to providing OEMs and major resellers with technology and designs to bring innovative hardware and software products to market. A privately held company, Aox is headquartered in Waltham, Mass.
