ANR STORAGE AND NGE ENTERPRISES PLAN TO DEVELOP NEW NATURAL GAS STORAGE FACILITY IN NEW YORK STATE

DETROIT, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- ANR Storage Company, a subsidiary of The Coastal Corporation (NYSE: CGP), and NGE Enterprises Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of New York State Electric & Gas Corporation (NYSE: NGE), today announced that they plan to jointly develop a salt- cavern storage facility for natural gas near Watkins Glen in south- central New York.
The new Watkins Glen storage facility would have an initial storage capacity of two billion cubic feet of natural gas, with a peak withdrawal rate of approximately 200 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.
The proposed storage complex will be connected to the existing pipeline systems of both CNG Transmission Corporation and Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation.
"The planned Watkins Glen facility will be developed from existing caverns, so we are familiar with their size and capabilities," said James F. Cordes, executive vice president of The Coastal Corporation and president and chief executive officer of Coastal's Natural Gas Group.
"Having this knowledge makes it possible to complete the Watkins Glen project by the start of the 1995-1996 winter heating season and to offer very competitive rates."
The joint-venture partners will file an application later this year with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for permission to construct the new facility and to obtain an open-access blanket certificate to provide storage service.
"The proposed Watkins Glen storage facility will be one of the first to provide high-deliverability peaking service to northeast markets," said Paul Komar, president of NGE Enterprises and senior vice president of NYSEG's Strategic Growth Business Unit. "High-deliverability, competitively priced, market-area storage will provide the flexibility and security required by users to prosper in the post-Order 636 environment."
An open season will be held later this year for parties interested in contracting for peaking storage services at the proposed facility.
Anyone seeking additional information on the Watkins Glen facility and the services it will provide should contact either James Lane of ANR Storage Company at 313-496-3515, or Anthony Ricca of NGE Enterprises at 607-762-4490.
