SURGEONS: AT THE EDGE OF LIFE (BBC Two, 9pm) Documentary series going beyond the theatre doors of Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, where surgeons push medical boundaries to the limits.

Surgeon Ewen Griffiths performs the most complex operation in his field - removing a woman's damaged oesophagus and using her own stomach to replace it.

The procedure can last up to eight hours and involves three different operating sites in the neck, chest and abdomen.

Consultant colorectal surgeon Simon Radley's patient is 64-yearold retired grandmother Hazel, who has a colon tumour that has spread to her liver and abdominal wall.
