ANNI PODIMATA, GILES CHICHESTER/EP.
Anni Podimata (S&D, Greece) and Giles Chichester (ECR, UK) were elected by acclamation as vice-presidents of the European Parliament, on 5 July, to replace Stavros Lambrinidis (ex-S&D) and Silvana Koch-Mehrin (ALDE, Germany). The former became foreign minister of Greece, on 17 June, following a reshuffle by Prime Minister George Papandreou due to widespread anger over new austerity measures. Koch-Mehrin resigned as vice-president, after doubts were raised about her 1999 university thesis, which was allegedly not properly sourced. The ECR takes over the seat left vacant by ALDE to restore the balance after Edward McMillan-Scott (UK), elected as independent, joined the Liberal group. A redistribution of all the vice-president seats will take place in January 2012.
