ANGER AT VICIOUS RAID ON JEWELLERS.

Byline: COLM DONNELLY

AN attempted robbery at a jewellery and engravers shop was described yesterday as like "a scene from a horror movie".

North Belfast SDLP Assembly member Alban Maginnis made the comment after two men ran amok in Kavanagh's Engravers on Gresham Street in the city on Monday.

During their attempted robbery the pair attacked two employees with an axe and smashed a display cabinet as an innocent shopper stood nearby with her six-month-old baby.

The manager of the shop said: "We feared for our lives during this ordeal. As I confronted the man with the axe he raised the weapon and brought it down aiming for my head, but I put up my arm to protect myself and the axe hit me on my wrist watch.

"It felt more like being hit with a hammer than an axe. When the pair ran out of the shop a member of staff chased them through a car park and he was hit on the back by the axe.

Mr Maginness said: "This was like a scene from a horror movie and is extremely alarming for people living and working in Belfast.

"Those who partake in this violent criminal activity are a threat to civil society and must be punished for their offence."
