ANGEL RESIGNS FROM READING & BATES CORPORATION

 HOUSTON, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Reading & Bates Corporation (NYSE: RB) announced today that J. T. Angel, president and chief operating officer, as well as a member of the board of directors, has resigned from those positions in order to pursue other business interests.
 L. E. Voss Jr., president of Reading & Bates Drilling Co., will continue to have operational responsibility for Reading & Bates' worldwide offshore drilling fleet. Paul B. Loyd Jr., chairman and chief executive officer, has assumed Angel's other duties. As a consequence, the company will not seek a new person to fill the vacancy created by Angel's departure.
 Reading & Bates is a New York Stock Exchange listed company, providing drilling and technical consulting services to the upstream offshore oil and gas industry throughout the world.
