ANERGEN BEGINS CONSTRUCTION OF PILOT PLANT IN REDWOOD CITY

ANERGEN BEGINS CONSTRUCTION OF PILOT PLANT IN REDWOOD CITY
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Anergen Inc. (NASDAQ: ANRG) today reported it has initiated construction of its 3,000-square-foot pilot plant for the manufacture of its AnergiX compounds under development to treat autoimmune diseases.
The facility, located adjacent to the company's Redwood City headquarters, is expected to produce and supply compounds for the company's multiple sclerosis (MS) and myasthenia gravis (MG) Phase I/II clinical trials, as well as other potential products.
John Varian, Anergen's chief financial officer, said, "This is an important step in scaling up Anergen's capability to produce our AnergiX compounds for trials of larger patient groups."
Currently, pilot clinical trials of Anergen's MS AnergiX and its MG AnergiX are ongoing under physician sponsorship at two universities. Varian estimates the cost of the pilot facility, including equipment, to approximate $1.4 million and he expects a significant portion of the cost to be provided through outside financing. Construction is scheduled to be completed in late 1992.
Anergen is developing therapies for the treatment of autoimmune diseases using proprietary biopharmaceutical compounds designed to inactivate or anergize only the specific T-cells in the immune system that are responsible for each disease.
