ANDREW-DAMAGED BUSINESS FINDS LOW-COST, SUBSIDIZED SPACE AT BEACON
COUNCIL'S TEAM MIAMI TEMPORARY BUSINESS CENTER
MIAMI, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Data Design, a computer software consulting firm whose South Dade County office was severely damaged by Hurricane Andrew, today became the first business to move into the Team Miami Temporary Business Center near Miami International Airport.
The Beacon Council, Dade County's business and economic development organization, coordinated the establishment of the 13,000-square-foot facility in the Koger Center office complex.
Twelve corporate members of The Beacon Council's Team Miami Andrew Response Task Force are helping subsidize operations for small-business tenants.
The Temporary Business Center is located on the second floor of the Koger Center building at 5255 N.W. 87 Ave. It can accommodate up to 70 small businesses and offers below-cost, subsidized office space with one-month to three-month leases.
"Several other businesses are scheduled to move into the temporary Business Center within several days," said Thad Adams, Beacon Council vice president for Business Expansion and Retention.
Monthly rents at the Temporary Business Center start at $250 for a furnished work station and $500 for a furnished office. Items provided by sponsors at no extra charge include: one phone and active phone line with call-forwarding and voice-mail features; an office-supply starter kit; and access to PCs, printers, copiers, fax machines and conference rooms.
Sponsors of the Temporary Business Center are: AT&T, Brickell Personnel Consultants, Copitech, Florida Power & Light, HQ Miami, IBM, Office Depot, Ryder System, Southern Bell, Steel Hector & Davis, Thomas W. Ruff & Co. and Xerox.
Data Design, which has three employees, is occupying a full office with a three-month lease. The company had been based in an office at owner Alphonso Gill's home at 10825 S.W. 154th St. That office has been unusable since Andrew struck on Aug. 24.
"The primary objective of The Beacon Council and the other sponsors is to immediately provide business-ready offices for dislocated companies that need temporary space to resume operations," Adams said. "We are extremely pleased with the significant contributions of Team Miami members from Dade County's private business sector."
