ANDERSEN CONSULTING: THE 'OUTLOOK' ON BUSINESS FOR 1993

SEATTLE, Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- More and more companies will need to reengineer their businesses to stay competitive in the next decade, according to the third annual "Outlook," a business magazine published by Andersen Consulting today. "Companies that want to survive into the 21st century must rethink the way their information technology, people and operations work together as part of their strategic vision," said Dean Nichols, Pacific Northwest managing partner of Andersen Consulting, an international management and technology consulting organization.
Why is there so much interest now in reengineering?
 1. Increased competition is forcing many companies to rethink where they are in the market and where they want to be headed. They're finding that incremental change isn't enough; they need fundamental change.
 2. The economic recession over the past few years has also spurred some soul-searching, as companies seek long-term strategies that will keep them strong despite the economy.
 3. Companies have invested millions in information technology (approximately $200 billion nationwide), and they want a bigger payback for their investment. They're willing to reengineer in order to do that. Information technology isn't providing enough bang for the buck. The gap between investment and payback can be bridged when companies rethink the way their operations, strategies and people operate together.
