AND THE SHIMMER IS.. fashion & beautyTHURSDAY.

Byline: ALISON KERR

It's been another bumper year in the world of beauty, especially when it comes to new brands launching or becoming available in Britain. And it's been particularly so for lip colour - whether shiny or matte, lipstick or liquid. But which new beauty buys were the best? ALISON KERR reveals the results of the Beauty Oscars 2017

BEST FOR FAKING FRESH SKIN Probably the best new brand to hit high street shelves this year is e.l.f. - - an American beauty company launched in 2004 as an e-commerce business. It is now a global brand. E.l.f Foundation Serum SPF25, PS9, is an ultra lightweight liquid base that is a real find. Despite its weightless feel, e.l.f. Foundation Serum is no sloucher when it comes to providing decent coverage and a natural-looking finish. It perks up the skin thanks to its cocktail of vitamins and oils which help brighten, restore, nourish and protect the complexion. And it evens out light redness, too.

BEST BEAUTY WAKE-UP CALL The Body Shop Drops of Youth Youth Liquid Peel, PS15, is a brilliant exfoliator which tackles the ageing effects on the skin of the high levels of pollution in most cities. It comes in the form of a faff-free gel which transforms into a peel to trap and gently lift impurities, pollutants and dead skin cells, revealing instantly fresher, more youthfullooking and more even-toned skin.

BEST SUPPORTING BRIGHTENING MASK From Hollywood this year came GlamGlow GravityMud Firming Treatment, PS39, a genius, 20-minute, peel-off mask which claims to tighten and contour the skin but is actually more of a winner for its ability to transform the complexion. You might start off with dull or unevenly toned skin but you will end up with a radiant complexion that glows for hours and is a dream canvas for foundation, should you still want to wear any! It may be silver coloured (it's great fun to use - you paint it on and peel it off) but it gets a gold star for results

BEST QUENCHER FOR PARCHED SKIN For instant relief from dry skin, Clarins SOS Comfort Nourishing Balm Mask, PS30, is a must. The thick, creamy balm-like mask envelopes the skin in a rich, balm-like texture. It contains wild mango butter to nourish and soften the skin, and mango oil - which is rich in fatty acids - to protect against dehydration and help restore suppleness. Not only does it make the skin feel better, it leaves it looking glowing - the Holy Grail for dry complexions.

BEST CONCEALER FOR UNDER-EYES If you find that many under-eye concealers just draw attention to the problems of dark shadows and fine lines, then Revlon Youth FX Fill + Blur Concealer, PS11.99 - a unique combination of soft focus powders which scatter light and blur wrinkles - is for you. It's so light that it's almost sheer, so there is no danger of clogging up the crevices and making you look like ET. It also brightens the eye area in a very flattering way.

BEST NEW IMPROVED CLASSIC Elizabeth Arden Advanced Ceramide Capsules Daily Youth Restoring Serum, from PS39 for 30, is an updated version of the single-dose capsules created in 1990. This serum enhances skin's barrier repair function, increases moisturisation and minimises the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. After a couple of days, your skin will look brighter and smoother.

BEST BROW BOOSTER Just as you might be forgiven for thinking there is no room for any more brow products on the beauty scene, along came L'Oreal Paradise Brow Pomade, PS9.99, which does a great job of drawing in natural-looking eyebrow hairs where previously there were none. It is brilliant for shaping the brow for as dramatic or natural a look as you like. It comes in an impressive five shades.

BEST FOR LUSCIOUS LIPS - LIPSTICK The dreamiest, most sumptuous lipstick of the year has to be Dior Addict Lacquer Stick, PS26.50, a hybrid lipstick and lacquer which delivers highly pigmented colour and a semi-glossy finish. It's the perfect lipstick for anyone prone to dry lips, thanks to its fondant-like texture. It feels as if it's melting into the lips but lasts well and the intensity of the 18 colours is exceptional.

BEST BODY PRODUCT FOR BODY PRODUCT AVOIDERS Glossier Body Hero Daily Perfecting Cream, PS18, is the body lotion for anyone who tends to give body creams a body swerve. From the cult American range which became available here a few weeks ago, it moisturises and softens the skin and gives it a flattering glow. If it doesn't convert you into a body cream devotee, there's no hope for you!

BEST PRODUCT YOU NEVER KNEW YOU NEEDED A primer for mascara? Yup, I was cynical about the need for one of those, too. But then I tried Givenchy Base Mascara Perfecto, PS25, and now I'm a believer. Why? Because it adds volume and a dash of drama while prolonging the look of your mascara and revitalising and protecting the lashes. So anytime you want to give your lashes a boost, or find that you've spent good money on an underwhelming mascara, get out this clever primer and it will work its magic.

BEST FOR LUSCIOUS LIPS - LIQUID Yves Saint Laurent Vernis A Levres Vinyl Creams, PS27, were originally launched five years ago and were among the first wave of liquid lipsticks to hit the market. These lacquers were fab then, and, in their new 2017 formulation - with a skincare-like undercoat - they are even more fab. They provide intense, super-shiny lip colour without the stickiness of gloss. Two-time Oscar winners.

BEST FOR KNOCKING A DECADE OFF THE EYES If puffiness round the eyes and fine lines beneath them are issues for you, get your hands on a bottle of Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Concentrate Matrix, PS49. The latest addition to the longrunning Advanced Night Repair collection - which started with just the classic serum - it uses "360deg Matrix Technology" to plump up and hydrate the skin round the eyes. Use twice a day and you'll soon notice a significant improvement.

BEST FOR GLOW-GETTERS Benefit Dandelion Twinkle, PS24.50, is undoubtedly one of the prettiest products of 2017. It's a beautiful sheer highlighter which can be used very subtly in a thin veil that is only obvious when the light hits it, or for a more dramatic effect. Whereas the original Dandelion powder is an almost flat ballerina pink, Twinkle is more of a pale peach/nude and it is shimmery. It has a natural-looking finish and is not at all metallic, unlike many highlighters on the market. In other words, it's the ideal highlighter for grown-ups.

BEST FOR BOOSTING HAIR VOLUME As anyone with fine hair knows, trying to add volume can often mean that you weigh your hair down with product. But John Frieda Luxurious Volume Core Restore collection manages to avoid that and does a great job of lifting the hair and giving it body. The Protein-Infused Conditioner, PS5.99, is particularly impressive and effective because it has a transparent, jelly-like conditioner, rather than the usual cream texture.
