ANAREN MARKS DIVERSIFICATION WITH 1ST MAJOR NON-DEFENSE CONTRACT

SYRACUSE, N.Y., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Anaren Microwave, Inc. (NASDAQ: ANEN) has been awarded its first major non-defense contract -- an order from Raytheon for a portion of Motorola's 66-satellite, world- wide cellular telephone network. As a subcontractor to Raytheon, located in Wayland, Mass., Anaren will manufacture the satellite antenna feed networks for the multi-year, commercial venture known as Iridium.
Iridium, scheduled for service by 1998, is a revolutionary telecommunications concept which will enable an individual to have a single telephone number where he or she can be reached anywhere, anytime -- without the need for codes or access numbers.
"The antenna feed networks are well-suited to Anaren's expertise in microwave systems, and represent our first significant success in the commercial marketplace," said Anaren's Larry Sala, manager of business development. "This contract marks the successful diversification of our company, utilizing the same core technology that to date we have used strictly for military and defense-related designs and products.
"The initial order, financially comparable to some of our largest defense contracts, will be funded incrementally, with significant follow- on orders expected," Sala added.
Anaren, located in Syracuse, N.Y., designs and manufactures microwave components, assemblies and receiver systems for commercial and defense use in electronics applications for ships, aircraft, land vehicles and space.
Anaren is traded on the NASDAQ Over-the-Counter National Market under the symbol ANEN.
