ANALOG DEVICES ESTIMATES FIRST QUARTER'S RESULTS

NEW YORK, Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- In a presentation to security analysts at a technology conference today, Analog Devices' President and Chief Operating Officer Jerald Fishman indicated that orders for the first quarter of fiscal 1993, which ended January 30th, will be about $160 million. "Based on a preliminary assessment of the quarter's results, we expect sales to total approximately $151 million," said Fishman, "and at this revenue level earnings per share are likely to be in the range of 15 cents to 16 cents."
Fishman noted, "It currently appears that bookings for the first quarter were up approximately 20 percent compared to last year's first quarter, and up about 5 percent sequentially. We're especially pleased about the sequential improvement because that would be the first time in four years that the first quarter's bookings exceeded those for the fourth quarter.
"The first quarter's bookings strength," added Fishman, "came primarily from Western Europe, led by orders for ICs being used in the GSM digital cellular phone network that is now partly operational and growing rapidly, and from customers in Southeast Asia outside Japan. Although North American orders grew only slightly over the fourth quarter, much of the growth we saw in the Far East came from U.S. and European customers that manufacture their products in countries such as Taiwan and Singapore. We also saw a modest sequential increase in bookings from Japan, which was encouraging given the continuing economic difficulties in that part of the world."
The company expects to officially release its first quarter results on February 17th.
