ANADARKO AND PARTNERS ANNOUNCE OIL DISCOVERY IN ALGERIA

HOUSTON, Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: APC) and Sonatrach, the national oil and gas enterprise of Algeria, and other partners, today announced that an exploratory well drilled in the Sahara Desert of Algeria has discovered an accumulation of crude oil.
The EMK No. 1 well is located in the Ghadames Basin on Block 208 (also called the El Merk block). The well was started on Nov. 15, 1992 and reached its target depth in late January at about 3,750 meters (about 12,300 feet.) Electric logs and wireline tests indicated the presence of hydrocarbons in two Triassic sandstone intervals and the company set casing to run flow tests.
In tests of the first zone, the well flowed at a rate of 1,972 barrels of 46 degree API gravity crude oil per day and 3.7 million cubic feet of natural gas per day through a three quarter-inch choke with 2,200 pounds per square inch of flowing bottomhole pressure. The test was conducted through small-diameter drill pipe from 10 feet of perforations in the deepest Triassic zone. The well produced no water, CO2 or H2S. The gas oil ratio (GOR) was 1,850 standard cubic feet per barrel.
The company is currently testing the other Triassic zone in the well. Until testing is completed, Anadarko and its partners plan to release no additional information regarding the well.
In 1989, Anadarko Algeria Corporation (a wholly owned subsidiary of Anadarko) entered into a production-sharing agreement with Sonatrach which gives Anadarko Algeria the right to explore for and produce liquid hydrocarbons in a 5.1 million acre area in Algeria. Sonatrach is the beneficial owner of 10.8 percent of the company's common stock.
Anadarko is operator and has a 50 percent working interest in the well. Other partners in the Algerian venture -- each with a 25 percent working interest -- are LASMO Oil (Algeria) Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of LASMO plc; and Maersk Olie Algeriet A/S, a wholly owned subsidiary of Maersk Olie og Gas AS, a company in the Danish A.P. Moeller group.
Anadarko Petroleum Corporation is one of the nation's largest independent natural gas and crude oil exploration and production companies. Anadarko's exploration, development and production activities are concentrated in North America's primary geologic basins onshore and offshore. Exploration efforts also are conducted in frontier areas of the United States and overseas. Anadarko has activities in 20 states and three Canadian provinces.
